What colour should a woman’s jacket be in open season?

I’m confused. Do you mean hunting or shooting open season? I have never heard hunting called open season, which may be my limited knowledge, however assume because of the forum you are asking about that.

Autumn hunting should be in ratcatcher I.e tweed of any subtle colours. After opening meet during hunting proper a woman should wear a black or navy jacket. Many opting for navy as more flattering. However most hunts would understand if an occasional visitor wore tweed. Under 18s should remain in ratcatcher.

That’s what I thought I’ve always worn navy but not hunted for many years - latest letter from hunt says black - so I was wondering if I had to go out and buy a new jacket - I have an ancient navy hunting jacket that is so warm and is beautifully made I’m loathe to wear anything else

The majority seem to wear black, I did wear navy until I grew out of it and a black was the most economical option. I've never received hunt instructions on what to wear though. ...

I’d carry on in your navy, more flattering and if it’s warm then much more practical for you! In these times my local hunt would appreciate more loyal and land/riding rule abiding members, rather than cutting people out for their colour of jacket. If you are concerned I would call the hons.sec but I would be very disappointed if someone was denied a navy jacket if otherwise appropriate.

I should have thought that the last thing a hunt should be worrying about is dictating whether a female mounted follower wears black or navy. Either are normally considered to be correct. If that is a serious rule, then I'd looking for another pack rather than buying a new hunt coat.

I wasn’t sure what it was - it was just their advice to newbies ‘ what to wear’ section - as I said not hunted for numerous years so was just checking that things hadn’t changed - I will ask the secretary if it’s ok ... if I ever find a horse to hunt that is ;)

I see the hunt ride past my house every year and I have lived here 6 years I have seen women wear black, navy and tweed so I think as long as you look smart it really doesn't matter.

I might be wrong (as I frequently am) but an older lady that I used to hunt with when I was younger always told me that un-married women wear navy and married ladies wear black.

Not sure if it's true but I always liked it and hoped in my 20's that my navy coat would signal that I was available to some handsome young Lord!

A was always told this too. Sadly I never picked up eligible young bachelor either....

On a more serious note, navy or black is correct but as others have said smart tweed will be fine. You will have to ring the Secretary before you hunt as a visitor anyway so discuss with them if you are still worried.
