Havana looks really good on black horses! But not actually sure if it's technically 'correct' when showing... What sort of classes do you want to do?

Depends on what you like and what level you want to show. County level requires Havana tack, local level doesn't matter so much

County level doesn't "require" havana tack. Whilst brown tack is traditionally used in the show ring, there are plenty of professionals as well as very good amateurs who use black tack on their horses, including HOYS level (watch the CHAPS class at HOYS - black tack all over the place there!).

I showed my old boy in havana tack, even though he was black. It suited him. However, my youngster, who is also black, has black tack, as he is very much a deeper blue/black than my old boy was, and the havana tack doesn't look as good on him. The black suits him much better. See what suits your horse best.

I'd also disagree with the statement : "local level doesn't matter so much". You should aim to turn out as well for a local show as you would for HOYS. It promotes a good attitude and ensures that your standards are high.

Most black horses I have seen are shown in black tack and it never hinders them or their placing in the show ring!
I have had one really anal judge who pointed out I had black tack on a very dark bay horse (who was nearly black) and when I explained it was coz he looked like a gimp in havanna his response was "I should get used to being placed lower down the line then" but that was the one and only time it has been mentioned on him.

As others have said local to HOYS black horses are in black tack all over the place! piebalds are in black, even greys are in black if it suits them better! My teacher used to show her appalloosa show hunter in black as he was grey with black spots and was anohter looked like a gimp in brown horse. And she did well at county level!

It depends on your horse and what makes him look smartest as that is the main aim in showing. (well that and winning obv!
