Hi all!
I’m VERY new to this and after countless searching on the internet. I can’t seem to get any answers!!

Ive recently purchased Irish draught colt who’s turning 2 in may.. since having him I’ve noticed he’s starting to get more of a ‘dun’ coloured belly and legs!
his sire is dun and his dam is bay, the breeder told me he won’t go dun but I’m very unsure now!! I’m happy with either colour I’m just very intrigued as I’m unsure if this can happen as I’ve only ever heard of horses ‘greying out’

First photo when I bought him a few months ago. And second is now

Thanks :)

He won’t turn dun. Sorry if you wanted a dun. There are different levels of brown / bay and his coat will probably change the way / depth of colour between summer and winter, also as he matures. Once he’s older you won’t notice as much difference unless he’s clipped in winter.

Does he have a dorsal stripe and leg bars?
I have seen some dun ID stallions but you'd expect the coat to be more washed out and dilute. He looks bay to me. Might have Nd1 if he has dun features such as the stripes. He can't go dun though I am afraid although shades can change with the seasons and the diet.

He looks like a wild bay they tend to have lighter hairs on the legs and belly but they are not always visable all year round, some have lighter hair in the mane and tail as well I have one his an Arab.

winter v. summer
and his black points haven't filled in yet but they likely will.

Pink apparently we aren't calling it wild bay anymore, people are using restricted bay or something like that now ?

Oh really I didn't know it had a new name:) I can't find any pictures of mine that show it properly, when his clipped the hair underneath is lighter whereas with my other bay it's darker.

My mares legs go the same in winter. Though less dramatically so. She’s bay.
