I took Howie for a walk yesterday and a lady hacking past commented on him saying - "what a lovely little roan! - how cute" He is grey on his passport- but what colour is he really?

Is he a true Grey? I assumed he was but not sure now.

Id say a bay roan but he is quiet light so might end up more strawberry roan as he gets older. Very cute pony but def not grey lol

Assuming he is a baby he will be grey soon I think. Most greys have a colour (Ours was kindof chestnut roan) I *think*

he is only 13 months now so yeah a baby- but odly he is more brown than he was when I bought him- I dont mind what colour he ends up- hes very special to me- and oddly very very loving at the moment. But it made me wonder is he is actually not 'true grey'

He looks like he is going to go through the same colour pattern as my connie.

I bought a chestnut foal, had a strawberry roan yearling, a steel grey 2/3 yold and a dapple grey 4/5/6 yold. He's now 13 and is very snowy white (well, he is in my dreams, in reality he is more pooh and grass stain coloured).......

Ahhh thats sooo cool. I dont know what his birth colour was as I only bought him in March. But I am looking forward to the changes.... wonder if I can get away with showing him as a roan this summer..... lol

He is a grey, greys are usually born a colour and grey out getting lighter every year.

A true roan has its base coat colour on its face (ie bay or chestnut) and the body is roan and doesn't get lighter over the years, although can be lighter/darker in the coat during the differnt season like most colours.

Ditto Teffy. A roan has solid colour on the face and legs (aside from white markings) as in the photos.

Your boy clearly has a lot of grey in his face - he is a grey and will eventually grey out.

The blue roan in my siggy is full sister to the top one in teffy's post (the black one is also a full brother) - a little family reunion!

Aww thanks guys- I did think he was grey but the lady did put a seed of doubt in my mind! Thanks also for your lovely comments about him. Hes off to a show on sunday so we shall see how he gets on- it''l be his first time!!

My first pony looked a little like that, and I though he was a grey roan, by the age of five deffinatly grey, infact a little bit flea bitten. So lighter he will get I think

Have you got any pics of him as a baby - as young as possible? That would settle the roan debate, as roans are born roan. If he was a solid colour as a brand new foal, then he's not roan, just grey. Or do you know if either of his parents were roan? (May be difficult to tell as at least one of them will be grey)
