What compromises do you / have you made to have horses?

I have a weekend job, and thankfully worked a lot over the summer holiday so at the moment that will hopefully pay until the winter. I cant afford to buy new clothes or to go out anywhere with my friends. I dont mind though, i'd prefer to go to the yard instead

Ditto this. Although I work full time which does help but I'm in the process of buying another horse so I'll be extra skint! My mum has been really good though and lent me some money for it so I can pay her back weekly. I think I must be mad I already have a 1 year old colt and now I'm buying a 2 year old filly! I haven't seen my friends for about a month.

i am quite lucky really
i am 25 and ive got 3 neds and a box and a new car....
because my parents made a trust fund for me and let me live at home during my 5 year uni course ive been able to be out competing etc.
now ive started my career (2 years in!) i have got a flat with OH and one with work so rent is just what i pay towards oH house.

but
i dont splash out on clothes for me (unless horse related)
i dont eat out more than once a week
i dont spend loads at nights out if i ever go on one- i can see a £60 night out in bales of hay!!!
i only go on holiday once a year.
and i have NO time left for nought else!

My biggest sacrifice is an OH - its really difficult to meet men when you spend all your time and money with or on the horse. Even if you do meet someone sooner or later the horse gets in the way (or they get in the way of the horse)

I'm a bit like SpottedCat. Gave up horses when I went to Uni and then didn't own one again until I was 30 when I was earning enough to pay for it to the standard I wanted. Bought my horsebox at 35 so I could have my dream of competing. But the only reason I have my own house (with mortgage) even now is because my mother died and left it to me. Living in the South-East as a singleton I would still be lucky if I could afford a 1 bedroom flat even on an above average salary.
