Also in The tack room. Anyone know what could be causing this wrinkled skin on my 5 year old mare? Shes had it at least two years now. Her skin is good otherwise. Her blood Protein levels are normal but she does have low potassium (blood test) for some reason. The wrinkles on her neck and body you can only see when she turns to itch but the ones on her throat latch, elbows and top inside thighs are there when she is stood still. Exercise makes no difference to them, its like her skin is a size too big for her.

Neck and body.

It's a symptom of DSLD, also known as EPSA. Does she tire easily, have mysterious lameness in more than one leg over time? There are a number of other symptoms, you should perhaps Google it. It is caused by laying down proteoglycan instead of the normal connective tissue, and a bit serious, sorry :(

Vets are still unfamiliar with it and yours may never have heard of it or even deny it exists on this country. You can get a diagnosis by nuchal ligament biopsy from Leahurst.

Thanks both. I have heard of and read a bit about DSLD but I don't think she has this. No lameness problems as of yet, not that she is working to be lame. Her wrinkles first came when she was on doxycycline back in early 2013 and when she has certain drugs the inside top of leg wrinkles come up and then go again.
