well yesterday my horses leg swelled up, its his front off-side swollen on knee and down inside of cannon bone. he is not lame and it is slightly warm, but not boiling. i have began cold hosing, and put him on box rest.

he was in field on his own so it is not a kick and there is no obvious amrks or areas of pain on it.

could it be a splint?
here is a pic of side view.

well he was in a small paddock on own but he may of tweaked it, its the not lame bit which confuses me because altho in pic doesnt look bad its pretty swollen.

May sound really daft, but have you looked to see if he has been bitten by a fly or bug, as my mare recently had a shoulder resembling a water baloon after a sequence of very nasty bites from something horrid

That's a nasty looking swelling ldlp. I can't quite work out the view but I don't think it's in the right place to be a splint. If ned had been lame I'd have been very worried. I'd carry on cold hosing but keep a very careful eye on it. Don't give bute just in case, unless vet advises. If not shrinking in 24 hrs or so, I'd have the vet out. Are you absolutely certain that there isn't a tiny scratch or puncture wound hidden in the hair? I'd have suspected a kick too, but if he was on his own, that rules that out. Stay suspicious hun x

One of mine has a huge leg, swollen from the hock down with no cut, slight heat but no pain even when really poked. given him several days off but it hasnt changed, he is sound and in no pain so i walked him out today to see if that helps and if exercise helps to reduce it. if its no better then i will ring vet on mon i think but i'm not too concerned as he is a real wimp and would let me know if he was sore. i even scrubbed his leg with hibiscrub and covered the leg in antispetic after clipping the hair off in case of a cut but this made no difference. just have to monitor it and hope it goes down and is a strange allergic reaction to something that has bitten him or he has eaten.
