I went to the yard tonight and my horse seemed fine, I gave him a bit of hay and then he started to scratch his mouth, he kept doing it quite badly, he would take a bit of hay then rub his mouth on his leg or on the wall. When i checked his mouth i saw this

Its like an ulcer or abcess round the base, I called my dentist and sent him a photo of it, he said its probably caused by a seed of hay or something similar and if possible to squeeze it til it burst witch i did. He did seem better after but i just want to make sure i did the right thing.

Has anyone seen anything similar to this.

I've burst a couple like this before with no problems, I would get some mouth wash like listerene and a syringe and squirt some in a couple of times a day just to clean things up.

If you're going to clean it up I would think salt water would be best. Have you used Listerine? My horses mouth is more sensitive than mine and that just about blows my mouth apart!

And if he's happier, and your dentist suggested you burst it, then I'm sure its fine!

Yes have used listerine and doesn't bother me nor my horses.

Thank you v.much for your replys, Show Girl its nice to know that you have dealt with them a few times before without any problems.

Will keep it clean, i like the idea of bubble-gum flavour mouthwash might get some for me too. :-)

Just keep an eye on it if it starts to get bigger or look angry or smell or horse having problems eating then get dentist to look at (or vet)
I might try the bubble gum mouth wash to :D
Hope all is well x
