What could her lameness be???

Having some issues with my mare - she was treated for bone spavin in her right hind hock around March time then brought back into work. Was all going well and started competing again, had farrier out 4wks ago Friday and the followin week she felt odd/lame, this time on front right. Have had vet out twice so far, and she comes up lame on the flexion but more noticeable under saddle in trot and on left rein/corners etc. She's also been on 2 bute a day for about 3wks now and hardly any change - its not getting worse, just not better either??? Feet were checked and no reactions etc

Vet is coming back on Fri to poss nerve block, but we are a bit stumped really. I hope we can include this in my claim for the spavin issues as that's still on going lol...

Any ideas?

I have just had exactly the same thing.Surgery from spavin caused splint in front right.Vet thought it was suspensory but pleased it was only splint.Its was the extra concussion from carrying spavin.Check legs for small bumps good luck

Hmm interesting? Star didnt have surgery, just had treatment of tildren and injections as we think we caught it at the early stages. I will mention yours to my vet tomoz...

What was yours like lameness wise, was it a major lameness etc?

I personally wouldnt be giving bute as its just masking the problem........ If shes more lame undersaddle to me that would indicate a back problem - has her back been xrayed?

yes horrendously lame thats why the vet thought it was susp ligament.He found the splint as well but thought lameness was all down to ligament.He has very flat front feet and I had to do a lot of hacking to fuse the hock thats when the concussion set in .He started shortening at the front and when I checked with vet and instructor they both said it was expected as I was doing more work and the joint was fusing.I was told to continue and bute him to make him comfortable I wish I had insisted on the vet coming out but he also stood on a 4 inch nail around the same time and had 2 weeks off so improved for a few days then went back to being sore. I dont trot on the roads but the hard ground could have been the cause.Let me know how you get on with the vet good luck.

well we orginally just wanted to see if it would hide something or not - not being the case. Her back is perfect and is deffo the front right otherwise wouldnt come up soo lame on flexion??? vet said by the reaction, if he had to look at anything it would be lower leg....
