Hello, my 12 year old lurcher is not right. She started weeing in the house occasionally, and I noticed her wee was very strong smelling so got vet to do a urine test. Came back saying there was blood in the urine. So she's on a week of antibiotics before going back to vet on Thurs. In the meantime she has vomited twice - both times a good 12 hours or so after eating. Am starting to worry its more than a urine infection. Does anyone have any thoughts what it could be - just want to do my research so I know what Qs to ask the vet.

Could be that the antibiotics are upsetting her stomach?
Some pills needs to be given x hours before/after food to be effictive, but if it doesn't say anything specific about it or says give with food, give pills after she's eaten, that's easier for the stomach.

Personally, I would call the vet and ask for advice tomorrow.
But then unless I know whats wrong, I'm the sort of person that knocks down my vets door in the morning, if I haven't felt it was acute enough to give me reason to take it to the vet.hospital open for emergencies.

Hugs from Sweden.

thanks for the hugs - I know she's getting on but she's never been ill, and is such a special dog, so its a bit of a wake up call

I am going to ring the vet first thing and see if they want to at least do a blood test or anything as well. I know they don't want to jump in there and do xrays and stuff immediately, because of her age, but that was before she'd been sick. I don't think its the antibiotics, but you never know - hopefully it is something simple like that. Thanks.

It's Clavaseptin (which I guess is penicillin?) - wasn't given any special instructions about giving with food or not - she's on one tablet twice a day.

it's amoxycillin and clavulanic acid.

i would give it with food if you haven't been but it might just be she doesn't get on with that drug. give your vet a shout tomorrow and see if you can try a different one.

spoke to vet - she is going in tomorrow for x rays - the vomiting is bringing up food that really should have been digested by then. Please keep fingers crossed for her.

Bladder stones!!! not uncommon in older bitches,x-rays and ultrasound can confirm,we went through this about six months ago...our girl had to be operated on,a stone the size of a jelly bean was removed and sent for analysis,it turned out to be "struvite"so she is now on a prescription diet and doing well.Good luck
