what could this be??

my horse went hopping lame yesterday after being shod.

the last time he was shod he appeared quite 'shivery' in his near hind when holding his leg up for the farrier. i had also noticed his shaking and discomfort if i was holding up the hoof for any length of time, eg for cleaning out and putting cornucrescine on his feet. he has never been lame on it before or caused him any problems

but yesterday he was very sore at holding the same hind leg up and was then reluctant to put weight on it so would not lift up another leg for farrier. so took him for a walk around and he was hopping lame. kept him in last night and on turning out this morning he is stil stiff and unsound on that leg but its using it which he wasnt doing yesterday.

any ideas what this could be? im phoneing my vet out tomorow but am racking the internet trying to find his symtpoms. im so worried about my beloved horsey!

presumably your farrier did a thorough investigation of the feet while he was there so we can eliminate these as possible causes?

Have you ruled out nail bind and spavin? If so, it may not be of any use in your case but interesting reading anyway, there was a thread on vets a couple of days ago giving a link to EPSM and veterinary notes by Beth A. Valentine. It states that often a horse with EPSM can be misdiagnosed as a shiverer.

yeah my farrier is brilliant, he was with us for ages watching while i walked him round etc. the problem is not from his feet but higher up xx

he doesnt seem to match the symptoms of EPSM, shivers, stringhalt, or bone spavin, so im kind of stuck....unles the problem is sacroilliac??

some more info - there is no heat or swelling anywhere, and the horse is a TB ex racer

Hi my mare found this very hard in the end and would shiver and even sweat in the end having to hold her back legs up for any length of time with the farrier. She was diagnosed with back problems.

Guess it was a bit like doing a flexion test, but she would manage to walk it off. He hasn't had a fall in the field or anything. Might be work getting a physio to take a look incase he's stiff elsewhere!!

yep...get her back checked asap. sounds like the stress of lifting her hind leg is causing discomfort.
you may be able to tell if you stand her up absolutely straight and look at her from directly behind her quarters. she may be down on one side.

how old is he???one of my youngsters went hopping lame like that i had vet out and he said it was where she had done so much growing and the muscle hadnt kept up so i had to walk her out a lot to help the muscle build up and has been fine ever since, i would have thought something like that would have taken time but was very sudden, or poss trapped a nerve going by the shaking????but would def have her back looked at as that seems the most likely thing could have damaged just by rolling?
