What could this lump be??

This lump appeared on Archie's front leg about a week ago and its not changed in size and its not causing him any bother at all, but I am starting to wonder if I should be worried about it!
Ive not got a photo, so Ill describe it best I can.....
Its about the size of a hazel nut, right under his knee at the top of his canon bone, slightly more to the inside. Its a boney lump and theres no heat, he's sound and doesnt mind you poking it!
My first thought was a splint, but I dont think its in the right place.

Any ideas?

sounds similar to what my friends horse has, in same situation as you, will watch this thread with interest.
