My gelding (TBxWB) has a swelling just below his knee between the cannon bone and the back of his leg i.e the skinny definition between the bones has gone and it is on both sides with a bit of heat. He is not lame on it and does not appear to be uncomfortable being touched but it came up a few days ago and staysound has not brought it down any?

Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be either a splint or could be check ligament.... there is definately not a very small cut or nick anywhere you could have missed that could cause the slight swelling?
I would be inclined to get your vet to have a look if there is definately now wound to see so you can be sure of what it is and not make something which is currently not too serious into something that is.
If you do get it checked out .. let us know the outcome.

Hi there - thank you both for your replies.

I have the vet coming out to veiw him. I dont think it is a splint as the swelling is not on the bone it is behind his cannon bone and between the tendon down the back - the tendon is still straight....... The boy is 17 years but very young and is not in "hard work" just general use - I think he has just "pulled" or "tweeked" something - but I would have thought it would have gone down by now ....

Hopefully the vet can shed some light on it .

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
