I have been offered a 2 1/2 year old sec D mare, for a stupidly cheap price as she is to much of a handful and to big (all ready at 14.2hh) for my 4 ft11 6 stone friend, so she is has said she would sell her to me at a very cheap price as she now has a 13hh pony and cant afford 2. Only thing is, and this sounds so fickle and awful, i HATE the name rosie, an ex once cheated on me with a girl who was called this.....but i dont want to confuse poor horse if i get her????

my fiance, suggested rose, rosa, rosalie, but i love the horses, she's a fab mover, gorgeous, lovely natured, but all i think of when i speak about her or look at her is i hate that name!!!! silly i know, i should be over it by now.....

My young ones all answer to the same name, which is..... C'mon C'mon! arrive at high speed from any part of the field.

How about maisie, doesn't sound too unlike rosie for her to learn, and rhymes nicely with crazy :D

I'm not convinced that horses know their name in the same way dogs do. My horse is called Rosie :) but I think it is my voice she responds to more than the name.

So, I think you could change her name to whatever you want.

I like maise, posie is cool, i tend to nickname them pony face when referring about them to people, it sounds so silly, im nearly 24, and this happended when i was 18, but the name makes my skin crawl, i was thinking maybe missy, as that sounds a bit like rosie, or tizzy or something similar sounding for her to get used to, its not a done deal that i'll have her, but this is the kinda major factor that the name makes me wanna rip my tongue out rather than say it. (says she who started a post on it......)

any further ideas or suggestions or opinions welcome....have to look at getting another partly as new my OH has ridden a couple times, im not getting much of a look in x

I changed my horses name completely when I bought her as a three year old as she was called Billie and it didnt suit her. She never noticed the difference and came straight away to me in the field.

I agree :)

So long as the name ends in a "ie" or "y" sound I don't think they'll know the difference.
Going from Rosie to Fred mightn't work as its a different sound, but Rosie to Empy, Missy, Lilly, Millie... any thing like that and she won't know the difference.

:)

What about a change of thinking if it's you that associates the sound of anything Rosie-ish with bad memories. What about Flush? Or Blossom. Or Flower. Or google "roses" and pick one of the hundreds of varieties? Can't remember any of them at the moment but I'm sure there's one dedicated to Princess Diana, so you could have Princess. There's a Queen Mother one as well, I'm sure so Queenie?

Its bad luck to change a horses name you know :D I know this isnt what you were asking with your post but im a sucker for superstisions (sp?) and say it to everybody who wants to change there horses name just so they cant say i didnt warn them :D.

If you are going to change her name, what about a name that relates to her origional name, like ruby (as roses are associated with red) perhaps. Is Rosie her registared/show name or just her stable name, if just a stable name perhaps you could pick a name out of her passported name? For example a mare i used to loan was origionaly called lady although her owners didnt like it so they looked at her registerd name (bryn castelles 1st edition) and picked cassie as her new stable name. Hope this helps. Sorry about the ex too!
