We want to crate train our new pup (she comes home in 3 weeks)

Any tips and advice would be grately appreciated.

Promise I will reward you with oodles of photos when she arrives

We have a border collie who is not crate trained and want to learn from the mistakes we made with her when she was a pup

Thanks

I bought my jrtx 2 crates from ebay they are a small I think. one for home one for the car, they were only about £15each and very well made. he is a year old now and still loves his crate!

Got a 36" off ebay for £25 but that was for the boot of the car, scabbed a 30" from my friend and that comfortably fits 2 poss 3 JRTs in, is used for caravanning or OH's car.

ETA - re advice, make it fun and homely not a punishment and don't make an issue/fuss about it - if you know what I mean? Err - basically make out it's the "norm". And if pup makes a fuss don't give in, ignore it, pup will get bored before you do

Does the crate need to be the smallest I can get as in just big enough for her lie down and stretch?
We already have a create which we use for our border collie to travel in but I think that might have too much room in for a Jack russell.

She needs to be able to stand, sit, lie and turn around comfortably.

You could put her in the one the Collie uses, wont do any harm to have loooooaaaaads of space lol

The reason I suggest smaller is because it encourages them to hold longer, if they are in to big a crate they will pish/crap:D and simply move to the opposite side, in a smaller crate they will hold as not to be literally sitting in their crapper:p

I hadn't thought of that lol!!! Mind you Millie was crated at night until she was house trained but I wanted her to have the new bed I'd bought for her so her crate (which was too big) was filled with bed lol

Definately a metal one - my little monster escaped from one of the canvas ones within about 5 minutes! (I hasten to add she is crate trained but was only a puppy at the time and had no respect for something that wasn't stronger than her!)

We have bought one - it is extra small, metal with a tray at the bottom.
Recomened for westie size dogs - Guessing a JRT is about the same size when full grown. Her mum is quite big, not one of the tiny ones and she is a bruiser at 4 weeks old.
Gonna get some pics later so will put them up
