So the previous screw off lid from my linseed oil container went missing close to me finishing the tub and I put it down to me misplacing it somehow. However my new one has now gone too, no sign of it anywhere and it was definitely on last night!

The pot shows no sign of nibbles and was stored in a spare stable with a shut door, so my question is, what creature can unscrew lids and would they take the lid but leave the pot undisturbed?I know rats have the brains but do they have the paws? (Was it just me or does that sound a bit Shania Twain?)

Example of the lid is below, any ideas?

? sorry, this is quite funny!
We had a similar experience yrs ago with a pine marten that got into our barn, lifted the lid of the cooler box, clawed open the plastic surround of my birthday cake, and ate half of it!
We only knew what had done it due to the coloured hairs stuck to the remaining cake ?
They have very fine fingers they can use like little monkey hands….so maybe your culprit is also a pine marten-type creature?

The squirrels do a nifty Commando crawl along my washing line in the winter when the bird feeders are out (put there to try to deter said squirrels:() so I would not put anything past the little divils.......

haha, some great suggestions! I'm pleased to confirm it is 100% not an Octopus, I'm 99% sure it is not a Racoon but there is a slim possibility, are they great at hiding in barns?

I would love it to be a Pine Martin, mainly because my garden is about 10mins drive away and is plagued by Squirrels, so I often wave my fist at them and shout 'you wait till the pine martin's move in Nutkins!'

I have never seen a squirrel on the yard so had discredited them but it does seem to be the sort of thing they would do but I would expect them to also knock over the oil just to increase the damage to the maximum?

Anyone with a pet rat fancy conducting an experiment to see if they can? In fact maybe I'll set up an experiment with my garden squirrels too, about time they did something useful after all of their pilerging!

Which one...the octopus or the raccoons?!?! ?? wild raccoons can hide anywhere - mostly in trees but wouldn't be surprised if they find homes in barns as long as they have a dark place to sleep during the day.
