What defines a hunter?

Hi,
I am thinking of entering Harvey in a few showing classes this year.:p .Two of the classes I want to enter him in are described like this:Hunter 4-year-old & over, to be ridden to carry under 13 stone. and the other one is Small Hunter Class, 15.2 h.h &under.Harveys not completely sporty,if you know what I mean but he's got a bit of bone.Would he fit in these classes or would we completely stand out.(There is a few other classes we could enter but I want to keep my options open:p: ) I live in Ireland so they may be slightly different then British classes.Thanks,Missladypotter.

Would he measure in as a cob? Need a better pic but he has a lot of bone & if all hair came off & hogged he could be a nice cob!

Hunter wise He's got too much bone for a Lightweight (13 stone and under) so I'd put him in the middle or heavy weight if that's your only options. He's too small for the MW or HW hunters really, but could do well as a small Hunter if all trimmed up & feathers off!

British classes are same as Irish, except for the ladies - here (in Ireland) the ladies hunters are astride and there is a seperate class for ladies sidesaddle :)
 
I ask myself this very question every time I show my hunter who is traditionally true to type (ID) as I warm up with a lot of fine boned fat bodied warm bloods.

Anyway your horse doesn't really look like a hunter small or otherwise. But if he's under 15.2 you are best off trying the small hunter class. Trim him up to within an inch of his life. Pull tail plait mane. Or hog him & show as a cob. What about coloured horse classes ?

He is concidered an old fashioned type for a small hunter.
A small hunter has to measure between 148cms and 158cms
A cob should be between 148cms and 155cms

No, riders weight isn't what the categories are for, it's for the amount of weight the horse could carry, as in a LW horse could carry up to 13 (or some are 12 & half stone) so they would have approx 8" bone. A medium weight horse would have more bone and a heavy weight having the most bone. The more bone a horse has the more weight of a rider it can Carry :)

Imo both of yours are cobs, the black one looks smaller though & I think from the photo is a more traditional type. The coloured, if he is between 148cm and 155cms could measure in as a show cob but would need to be hogged & no feather (and no beard!!) and fully trimmed up.
The problem is for your boy is that you say he is under 158cms so although he has enough bone to go into the 13 stone & over hunter class he isn't really the type (think a proper IDxTB hunt horse) or height for it.
He could be trimmed up and shown as a small hunter, which are traditionally seen as a smaller version of a middleweight hunter, but it's hard to tell from photo and through all that hair :p

For your show I'd enter the ridden over 13 stone hunter class and small hunter class, assuming it's not Dublin :p
