What did I do in a past life to deserve this?

Not really, just things to watch but enough for me to try and haggle!

Oooh exciting, let me know how it goes

Ooof I’d be careful here and I say that when I negotiate and work in sales for a living. The seller has been extremely decent to give him to you on trial. If these things are truly not really anything to worry about and he’s sound I’d be a little annoyed at being “haggled” with if I was them.

I’m assuming you aren’t talking mega money on the haggling anyway given it doesn’t sound like anything big. The seller sounds like they’ve been great.

You don’t want to annoy them too much and potentially lose what sounds like a great pony for you.

I agree - I spoke to my physio and instructor and they both said to offer a lower price because of the findings. It’s something that he won’t be insured for so they suggested to do so as a buffer.

He is being sold by an agent, who is a friend, hence the 2 week trial.

But, I definitely agree that I don’t want to annoy them or lose him.

I feel for sellers sometimes tbh. If they aren’t things that need to be worried about then not sure why the insurance would be an issue as you won’t be expecting to claim, but if you feel mentally better about it by having some money off then hopefully you can do it without annoying them. Especially if it’s a friend.

I guess you have to ask yourself if you’d have been willing to pay the asking post trial if you’d known about these things already.

Either way good luck and looking forward to pics!!!

Just remember that the seller will be relying on the fact that you, as a private individual, have had the horse for 2 weeks and fallen in love enough with him to have him vetted etc etc. If it is only a small amount that you are haggling over, are you prepared to walk away and send him back if they call your bluff?? Or, are there other things you can negotiate on....including rugs, tack or whatever in the original sale price? Alternatively, will your friend/the agent compromise on their commission? Could get messy!

Someone tried to do this to me, I went and got him back. TBH if its a good one I would rather keep it and not sell than have nasty taste in my mouth. I then sold it for almost double the price with no trial.

I don't see the problem if the haggling is done respectfully and not in a 'take it or leave it' manner.
A trial is just that, I expect the vetting to be done in the first week, and if they then want to up the negatives there is the trial time limit. I think haggling is fine if the animal is not in the prepective owners control, but when does it become a loan or just an excuse to have the use of an animal without cost. Imagine if it was a car, you would need to know if it was fully insured, and returned in the same condition, its not normal to get a free car while you decide to buy it, and in theory a car is more easily fixed.
I would want it in my control while they decide, and be open for further viewing. When I sell I do not take deposits, it clearly the person who pays me cash, and appears to have enough knowledge to look after their purchase, as a seller I would walk away.

Guys, this is getting a bit out of hand. All parties in my situation are completely fine. I have spoken to both of them and there’s no annoyance or animosity from either of them. The two week trial and then vetting once I got to do a bit more with him was actually the agent’s idea as our second viewing wasn’t the best. I just couldn’t get it earlier than Friday due to work and wanting to be there.

I’m not trying to mess around the owner or agent and have been in regular contact with both of them. And I’m not trying to take advantage of their good nature.

I sold a few last summer, one with a trial. I priced at x, expecting to get slightly less. Two sold for full asking price, the others a little less as expected. If people asked for silly amounts off I simply said no. 🤷‍♀️

OP can ask for £x off, owner can say yes or no or come to an agreement somewhere in the middle. Nothing unusual about that.
