What do Actual and Notional mean?

As title really. I've never known what they mean apart from they are something to do with BSJA prize money.

'Actual' is exactly what it means....'actually what you won'. 'Notional' is a lesser amount, around 50% or so of the 'actual' amount you won. It is the 'Notional' amount that is the important one. 'Notional' is used because is you added up your actual winnings you would be out of a class well before your horse was ready to move on...OK

Ah so if you were at a show where the prize money was generous you'd have more prize money and be out of a class sooner than if you were at a show with less prize money if it was calculated on Actual?

Do they have a system for working out Notional then? Such as 1st = £20, 2nd = £15 for example?
