As this is my first foal, and my first attempt at any form of showing :)o) I was wondering whether you could all offer me advice as to what steps I should be taking with him now?

He is SHB(GB) registered and will be a yearling in March 2008.

I have bred him for dressage and he is very straight and conformationally quite nice (although I know they change a lot as yearlings and become what I think are ugly ducklings at that age

). I want to get him out to a few shows but have absolutely no idea which ones to do, how to prepare etc etc. I see some people take their horses to BD futurity competitions which I would be very interested in, but again I know nothing about.

There is no one I know who could really offer me advice on this one, although the stud owner where he is now obviously knows her stuff through gradings etc. But there is no one in the area that I know personally who could offer me advice and help me organise some competitions for him

A lot of the county shows now have classes for Sportshorses in hand, so that's one place to look. I'm not familiar with your neck of the woods so don't know what's on up there. Isn't there a Royal Lancs?

The BD Breeding and Young Horse Championships have a yearling class. It is in July at Addington.

The Futurity is run under the banner of BEF rather than BD. It is not a competition as such. Details here......

Just remembered there is a handy booklet here.....

http://bspaonline.com/pdf/2007/Booklets/Judging_Sport_Booklet.pdf

......on judging Sportshorse classes. Whilst obviously aimed at the judge it also has some excellent advice for handlers too.

As far as turnout goes, Troy will need to be plaited and wear an in hand bridle.
Whether he is bitted or not is up to you but you need to be in control!
For you, at the county shows all the competitors wear tweed jackets, shirt and tie, plain coloured trousers, usually beige, shoes or short boots that you can run in and a beagler or trilby.

At the BD show, the BEF Futurity, warmblood or breed specific classes, handlers usually wear 'whites'. White tops and trousers. A less practical colour I can't imagine when dealing with horses!!!

It does however look very smart, but I'm usually struggling to keep myself from being slobbered on! Luckily I can get away with dark trousers when showing Spider, due to needing to contrast with his white legs!

I fancy doing BEF with Rhi next year, slightly nicer weather in August and their summer coats are still in.

This was a pic of me (but the photo is minus me) when my old bosses mare took Supreme at the BD champs at Addington, I'd definitely recommend that one to you B. And if Tempi reads this, this is the dam of the stallion I PM'd you.

Thanks for all of that information, I am off to do some swatting up from the links that have been provided
smile.gif

We do have Royal Lancs, but I have a feeling you have to qualify and i wouldn't know where to start
frown.gif
In hand bridle we can do, he is excelled at pressure work because I did a lot of halter work when he was younger so the control thing should not be an issue. I would prefer not to bit him, but do the judges prefer them bitted as a yearling?

Addington might be a bit too far a trek for us, we'll see what he is like when he is starting travelling etc. But I have to say, the white do not appeal to me. I struggle keeping clean for BD comps

I've never know a county show that you have to qualify for.

For the sportshorse classes you normally have to be registered or overstamped with the SHB(GB) but Troy already is, so no problems there.

When the show numbers of H&H come out, have a look for shows near you in them, get your schedules sorted and away you go!

Right... and when is that usually? (I told you that I am a complete showing virgin

)

I can't wait to get him out, or at least get him looking like a horse again as opposed to a mud pie

There's three issues now, end of Feb to beginning of March.

Some schedules will be online before then.

There maybe a website that posts dates and schedules for your area. I use Horsedates but I think that's only for East Anglia.

I would do it as I love wearing a bowler hat and looking like Stan Laurel whilst you have a cute little foal jumping all over you whilst you have some judge taking more notice of the owner than the horse. Oh how I miss doing that............not

Good Luck and always leave the ring with a smile on your face

Echo bananaman's advice, look through the H&H showing issues for county and agricultural shows near you, and you could do the sporthorse classes with him there.
The bEF Futurity tends to try and have one in each part of the country. I think last year it was West Midlands, East Midlands, Wales, Scotland, North West, Hampshire (South), Devon (South West).
Staceytanglewood, when we lived in Sussex we did the Hampshire one at catherston and I know people from Essex travel up the A1 to the East Midlands one at Arena UK.

If he or the mare is registered SHB you can do all the county shows, I managed to find this site which adds all of the county shows http://www.limousin.co.uk/shows/2007/index.html or http://www.asao.co.uk/shows.php You can then qualify for the SHB shows

You can do the sport horse classes, lightweight hunter, all sorts really

Then you can do the BEF where he can do the classes for future dressage horses etc

Lots of fun!!

there is normally a Spring Sport Horse Breeding (GB) show at Osbaldeston- I think it's Mark Fitton that organises it??

Lovely show, classes for sport horses & hunters in-hand, Young dressage horses & Burghley young event horses.

It is always well organised & because there are a lot of pros who are used to young horses it's a lovely venue to take a big (potentially naughty!) youngster to. County shows sometimes terrify me when numpties pushing prams with toddlers in tow walk around the backs of hyped up baby horses & stallions.

Thanks... I think you may be right.

I might contact Mark Fitton and see whether there is someone around who could offer me some advice to. I could always hire out Osbaldeston and give him a trial run (see if I could hire a crowd etc etc).
