My lovely novice eventer has broken AGAIN!
He did three suspensory's two years ago, gave him nearly 2 yr's off, brough back into work slowly got him fit again starting eventing again, second event stopped in the sj really unhappy horse. Went to the vets, they scanned his front leg, in there words ( ROTTEN!) the suspensory damaged again. Been told he will never jump again. At the moment they don't think he cld even do a dressage test. Think he needs another yr out before getting him fit just to be a dressage/ hack horse.
What do i do with him? Can't keep him at home as gets stressed if not brought in with the others, not got any other fields!

Project Horses? You are in a bit of a pickle, really sorry to hear that.

What did amaze me though is when I was on that website the other day, people are trying to sell their equally broken beasties (more so, they can never come back into work) for 2k - for a gelding. I don't quite understand it...

Good luck, and sorry that it all went belly up.

Oh poor horse.

My horse split his DDFT and was told he would be lucky to plod around the fields without pain.

12 months later we were back to hacking as normal and having lessons at 18 months.

Do not despair, he may come right yet. Cant help you with the field situation sorry.

I know how you are feeling. Shortly after our 2nd lesson, he was lame and found out he had arthritis and he is now retired. hugs

Does anyone have a broken horse that woukd like to have a broken horse friend for a while ? I 'm thinking if I can find someone who had also got a horse that needs a rest whether they two can go out together somewhere. I think thats all I can do.

- retirement livery? Or maybe you can find a friend who can just stick him out for the rest of the summer? I have a broken horse but I ignore it! (Bone spavin - had surgery though). Where are you based?

Thats a good idea emma. I would have him if he could be hacked at a later stage, but I cant have 2 broken horses as much as I would love to.

I know how you feel. my horse has done a suspensory twice in ten months. This time around he has 2 months box rest with inhand walking. month on small paddock with ridden walking and now he is about to be turned away for 3 months. The vets aren't sure if he will come good or not. They are talking about a loss of use claim. Although they do think he might be able to plod around around with someone .... however my boy is a sensible neddy and I think plodding around with someone would suit him.

Could you find some grass livery for yours, where he is effectively going to be a companion?

My vets advised me to be careful claiming for loss of use because if the horse got colic or something, the horse would not be covered, I believe its only 3rd party fire and theft for insurance after LOU.

But I am probably wrong.

I can't claim loss of use on him because I would have to have him put down! And also can't claim loss of use because he's had work on the leg and I can no longer claim on it.

Interesting that you were given the advice to continue eventing once he'd done it - I have a mare who did her suspensory (not even tremendously badly) and was told that was the end of her jumping days. She came sound approx 1 yr later and now hacks out & does low level dressage perfectly happily. It does take time but I think you might have been badly advised in the first place.

As to your current predicament I think you'd be better finding him a pal who is also broken so that they can be turned out together for however long it needs - even if you have to rent a field somewhere it has to be less hassle!

The vets scanned my horses leg throughout his rest period and it did look as if it had healed. So I guess they thought with a careful fitness plan he should be okay. And to start off he was fine. But the harder the work began the worse he started to get again.
I had another mare who did a check ligament ( no not the same thing) and she had a yr out brought her in got her fit she now does well at high level ponyclub stuff and fingers crossed doesn't break again, so some heal and can carry on.
