Hello,
I have recently got my first pony and I’m in a bit of a fix. I bought a 4yo unbacked cob mare who had not been weaned from her 8 month old foal. When she was brought over they brought the foal in the box too before taking away. My mare is currently on day 5 of box arrest with planks across the door, she keeps trying to jump out.
Our field is 10acres and there’s a mare and two geldings in the heard. The fencing is basic and jumpable onto a road and adjoining property. We don’t have a round pen or a way of fencing her off but I can put up some electric if that will work.
right now she’s not socialising due to the planks on the door, she’s been nose to nose with the lowest ranking herd member. I’m feeling sick and worried what I can do after the two week period. If I turn her out she’ll just escape I’m sure. If anyone has experience or advice on this can they please help. Could I send her away to be broken and will she come back without the desire to escape?

When you say unbacked has she had any handling? You said 'just come over'. From Ireland?
Whatever, you need to keep a very close eye on her udder, not too rich feed and she needs to keep moving about to try and avoid mastitis if she hasn't already got it.
Yes send her away to be cared for somewhere with more suitable facilities, but she'll need a while to settle into her new life before breaking in.
Who on earth advised you this was a suitable first pony ? ?

Can you send her back, or gift her to a knowledgeable home? I am sorry if it sounds harsh but to me it does not sound as if you are experienced enough for this poor pony. You have already put her through torture. Really you need to make sure that you are able to look after animals before buying them.

I wouldnt rely on electric fencing in this situation, possibility of her charging through no matter the shock. Solid high stallion post and rail fencing stands a chance of containing her so she can move and see the other herd to begin introductions.
It doesnt sound as if you have a strong fenced area for her to move in to be introduced to the herd slowly. Either put her out with them and risk all sorts of things, or keep her stabled, which just increases her stress and makes her worse.

Considering everything, foal etc - i’d be ringing the sellers, ask they come with the foal, take her back, wean properly, and return her once weaned fully.

Your inexperience has been taken advantage of and you presumed the seller would know what they were doing. If your inexperience wasnt declared to the seller, they could have assumed you knew what you were doing with a forced weaned mare.

Sad situation.
