can some one help me with the materials i need for a home made field shelter. doesnt have to be anything exciting. purely something for my mare to get out of the wind and rain over night and somewhere dry for her to eat her hay. aslong as it has 3 sides and a roof thatl do!

My friend built her own and it looks very good.

I'm presuming you're fairly handy at wood work and have the tools here:

She went and had a look at the ones you can buy and took note for what they were made out of, ie. the frame and then the pannelling, the roof structure etc and at how they were put together.
She then designed similar, worked out how much of each timber etc she would need and then priced the whole thing up.
The key is find something simple, a design you can copy, and you dont have to build it the same, you can say adapt the pannelling. The frame is the most important part, get that right and you can't go to far wrong.

Also if you want to be able to move it, you dont want the whole structure to be in one piece.
Think of panels, ie. back, right, left, flat roof, front.
If you build each side as an individual entity and then suitably bolt it all together, you can dismantle it and move it anytime you want.

and dont forget to weather proof it if you want it to last and not rot!!

thanks for that. i have family and friends who are good at these kinda things so they are going to help me. im going to speak to my brothers best mate who is a builder and has alot of spare time on his hands currently and see if he can do me one on the cheap.

The sides of mine are made of a garage room I believe and then corregated (sp?) on top. The base is made of telegraph holes.

Was meant to be a budget shelter but dad and grandad turned it into a project so it got a feed room on the side :D

6 telegraph posts, tin sheeting for roof, woodyard that will supply featherboard?(thats what I know them as) 12' lenghts for back and you can cut in 1/2 for sides, 12' lenghts for roofing about 4 or 5 judging your sawing. and guttering for the back which will catch rain water, which saves you a bit of money.

My Dad made me this, it's fairly pro though as he doesn't do things half-heartedly :). It's 20*10ft and cost about £600 in materials. The box profile steel for the roof was second hand but I think all the wood was new. It was made in 4 sides then bolted together. There is a steel support front to back to hold the roof and then wooden supports side to side. Also, 2ft long metal pins nailed in to the planks at the bottom to hold it down. Lining board was nailed on last.

I have to say though, he has all the kit included welding equipment, nail guns, mitre and stihl saws, you name it. So it's not maybe an easy job as a total DIY project.

I love it though; but not half as much as my horses. They spend more time in it than they do out grazing

thats very nice!! i think il go down the building my own route as i can customise it abit. i would like a little section at the end like a mini tack room cubby hole just to hang rugs in and little bits and bobs away from my rug destroying mare! shes hideous! pulls the rugs down and trashes them! its going in a sand paddock so has to be a particular size.
