Apart from sell them on ebay.
Do you keep a selection of saddles? Old, doesn't fit, narrow, small ect....
I seem to have a selection of the above, yet can't seem to sell them either and none are knackered, just not what people want!?
And, why is it, I phone up second hand saddle 'shops' and they say 'yes, bring them in, but we don't accept narrow saddles as they don't sell'.
Does this mean that nobody has a TB type anymore, they are all 'fat'? Or is it simply fashion to get brand new ones therefore pricing the second hand 'older than 15 years' saddles completely out of the market?
I am just really curious.... back then all saddles were appriciated regardless of looks or age!

I wouldn't dream of selling my old saddles. Mind you, I hoard all my tack, rugs etc. You never know! Come to think of it, I have some tack which belonged to my Grandfather and I still have stable bandages with tape instead of velcro ;)

If they are still in good shape, you could always ring round some rescue centres and see if they could use them - they tend to have funny-shaped horses:D They might say no, but it does no harm to ask:)

I would like something for them, so although thats a great idea (and have done it before) I won't this time.

How many of us do have more than 1 saddle they don't use? I guess they just collect dust too!!

me, I have some I need to get sold really, but I hate eBay so that options out. the horse who's saddles they were is no longer with us sadly.

Not sure how im going to advertise them, pic with a tape measure to show the width I think, as Im not actually sure what width measurement they are classed as now, there seem to be so many more widths these days :D

I sold my Tbs on ebay and plan on getting her one fitted when the time comes.
My cobs synthetic one has seen better days and she will also be getting a saddle in a few weeks but i will be keeping her old one to back my other baby when the time comes, he is a welsh d so pretty wide too so hopefully it will do him for backing also.

I have a shrine in my attic - my old mare's "Eldonian" saddle by Turf & Travel ( "your pleasure is our business" ) has pride of place along with her regular bridle and headcollar with a rope on it enough to hold the Queen Mary.

It's all taken down every couple of months and oiled - perhaps one day - my boots will up there facing backwards!

A local saddler bought a narrow jump saddle (one of the first contact ones!) off me for display - sold it for £50 profit the following week by someone who had been searching for that saddle...

I for one, are sick of going to tack shops to look for 2nd hand saddles and all they have are wide, extra wide and XX wides!! The reason why they don't sell is because TB owners are forced to go out and buy new as no one sells 2nd hand narrowish saddles.

But WHY does no-one sell second hand narrow-ish saddles??
TB's and similar types DO exist, and surely they can't all require wide fitting saddles!!
Do we blame the fact that alot of horses are now ''fatter'' than ever before? Or do we blame the owner who has more money than sense, whom buys a brand new saddle, thus employing 'saddle fitters' and equally pricing second hand completely out of the market? Could be both of course!

Mine live in my garden shed getting mouldy and being cleaned up in a never ending cycle. One I will keep forever for sentimental reasons, the others are "narrow" saddles that apparently there's no market for these days. They used to be used on 15hh WHPs, i suppose it just goes to show how much the shape of the modern show horse changed after the late 80s early 90s. I'd have thought I could possibly get one of them near my small riding horse but the saddle fitter says no so there we are.....

My spare room contains far too many spare saddles that I have collected over the years, everything from an lovely old Barnsby Jumping saddle, through dressage and show saddle, a couple of WH saddle and a couple of GP's. Two of them will stay for sentimental reasons but I need to get rid of the rest, 3 are really nice saddles and worth a decent amount, they other 3 are not worth much and there is a Wintec dressage that has barely been used it would be great to get rid of them as I really want my spare room back but I really don't know where to start!

Well, I am glad I am not the only one who hoards saddles!!
Maybe we should set up a HHO saddle shop - like the bit bank? Ebay works for some, but there is definately a set trend these days and the older (and narrow saddles!) don't get a look in!?

The good news, I guess, is that the saddle fitters are on to a sure thing, bit like plummers, never out of work!

I got rid of two of my old saddles: the first belonged to my first pony and was a very old saddle; the second was my last old boy's saddle.

I used to keep them out in the hay shed under a pile of hay, under a rug, and sometimes I'd go and plonk the saddles on a bale of hay and just sit on them and reminisce that I was sitting on my dear old boy's - stupid I know but that's what I'd do.

Then I went to an indoor equine marketing event locally; the ILPH had a stall there and they were inviting anyone to donate tack - so in a rush of enthusiasm this is what I did.

Its a 17'' Sabre medium in black. I've used it a few times, but really don't have a need now for it. I had it at our local tack shop for 1 year, it didn't sell (too many others), I now have it in my sitting room. My OH is pleased - not!!
I've just put it on ebay

I've stuck it on my watch list... although was looking to buy mid July when my half yearly bonus came through :)

I keep all my tack, and harness.
i have to say after going to a pony sale the other month, and seeing how much people were asking for tatty old saddles, i might sell some. :D
if anybody wants to sell their tatty old 17" xwide saddle for a nice cheap price , let me know! :D

I sold some via a large equestrian centre. Commission was quite high but I knew they would sell. They have shows et all the time and people go in and out. I need to sell another one tbh. i will do the same thing as it is just easier.

I am on the other side - I am looking for a jumping saddle in narrow, and they are like hen's teeth. It's quite frustrating.

We still have every saddle, including a side-saddle, we have ever owned, bar one.

That one belonged to the horse we had for 23 yrs and did have sentimental value to us but just happened to be exactly the right unusual shape to fit an acquaintance's horse and she just happened to have one which fits the horse sis has now. So we did a swap, with some monetary adjustment. Sis still bemoans the fact that the old saddle was more comfortable for her than the new one -but as the old one didn't fit this horse, there was nothing we could do.

I have the saddle which IDx brought with her, which is a lovely Falcon Event but at only 17 1/2" is too small for both her and me. I am seriously considering taking it to Derby House to sell on commission. Fortunately I was able to have a Saddle Company saddle which belonged to the Clydesdale made to fit IDx. I like the sense of continuity that gives.

The other saddles really have sentimental but no other value. I'm glad we're not the only hoarders.
