My mare started tying up this winter the first time ever iave owned her for 7yrs and never had a problem so i ajusted her feed to 1scoop sugarbeet 1scoop of h&p mix and 1 scoop of molly chop and a splash of oil and shes fine the problem i have now is i do quite allot with her eg hunting ect and iam worrid shes not going to have enought energy so any suggestions on feed she caint have anyting hight in protien as this is what caused her to tyup

My old horse used to tie up and quite badly too. He was also fed ERS pellets and HiFi, he never tied up on these and I was riding every day, fast work, schooling and showjumping up to 1m15. He did well BUT they were very very energising!! Not sure what ingredient sent him so crazy but something in them did!! He was spooky anyway and this feed exacerbated this quite dramatically! He could also be picky at eating up the ERS pellets, he wasn't that keen on the taste.
So as he got older and his work load dropped he was moved on to HiFi, leisure mix and pink powder, he didn't tie up on this either as although it was a mix (fussy eater) it's a very low spec one (same as high fibre cubes) so he was fine.
My horse absolutely could not be fed traditional conditioning/competition mixes or cubes they were the worst for him and it was build up mix that caused him to first tie up :(

My mare went through a terrible phase in the winter of 2009/2010 of tying-up chronically. We think sugarbeet was the major culprit, but it took us a while to work that out because she didn't tie up the year before and was on sugarbeet then. However, since we've eliminated it, no more problems.
We also feed selenium and vitamin E supplement, and I just keep her on it even though she's been fine for a year. I just think that our grazing is very limited, and it's possible that she wasn't getting vital minerals from the field.
What works for her is not having any food at all high in sugar, and she has to be exercised regularly, build up fitness gradually etc - all the usual tying-up rules. (If you can gently exercise a horse with a naturally fizzy temperament).
Poor you, it's a really hard one to manage, but once you get the right formula hopefully it will work.

thanks for your replys i actualy work in a racing yard that feeds ers pellet so will defanatly try them for extra energy i was also feedind alfalfa which i had to cut out of her feed

Re-Leve by saracen feeds is worth a look too, as well as anything high oil/low starch :)
My friends mare ties up, and she is on Hifi, and Spillers Slow response cubes, and hasn't tied up since being on this feed.
