Definately a personal opinion on what suits your horse and you. ive been on livery yards with limited turnout which was not ideal at all especially havng a young horse since then we now have decided to go with 24/7 turnout if you have the land and grazing with suitable shelter then why not my horse prefers to be out but we bring him in really bad weather and he also has a field shelter in the field if needed last year he was rarely in as we didnt have enough stables and you can definately tell the diffrence since him being in. but having that field shelter we could still go a winter without stabling and be okay but the grounds not doing great.

I was a strong advocate of 24/7/365 turnout with all my horses … then I met Oscar. A ridiculously nesh section C who hated being out when it was cold or wet. So he came in. Dolly could not cope with that much sugar. Lottie likes turnout in spring and summer but starts to pace once the grass runs out even with hay out. With the perfect set up (well draining soil, plenty of space, shelter, forage) yes it’s ideal. But not many people have access to that.

yeah agree with you 100 percent definately is an opinion of what your horse is like ive had some that hate rain some that dont like being in its really to do with what suits your horse and you alot of places with 24/7 turnout are old farms renting fields out or people have bought there own and its quite rare your right to have access to all the grazing and facilites needed for 24/7 turnout to be suitable all year round

Mine goes nuts on restricted turnout in the winter and is unrideable.
She comes in 8am-12 everyday for hard feed excersize and rug change then goes back out, huge fields with round bales of haylage, still gets pretty muddy but doesnt seem to suffer from mud fever

If they have good shelter and a proper field, with company and grass coverage rather than a bog, it’s fabulous. I have two that don’t like it and don’t cope, but if it works for the horse, definitely a good way to go.
i can’t even begin to count how many rehab liveries I get in that are broken due to standing in for months on end. Out is almost always best.
