as title really. A notice has gone up on our notice board to say someone is having a Mctimoney practioner out if anyone else is interested. Its not something I know much about as have always had vet and saddler checks for my horses back. Any info appreciated.

ETA I don't think my horse has a back problem at all but I would possibly be interested to have him checked.

Thanks

A good physio or chiro will do far more than just check the back, they assess the whole horse, its movement and general suppleness, then treat any areas of concern, it is worth doing but the practitioner will need to get permission from your vet to do any treatment, this is usually not a problem.

We have one fairly regularly (say twice a year) to our bunch and he is really good. If there is nothing to treat he will say and just give an overall massage but we have had some horses with issues and I have noticed a remarkable difference after treatment. He has also treated our dog and the most significant was when my mum's GSD x was lame (front leg) on and off for a few months. Vets could find nothing and treated for inflammation but it still niggled away and she wasn't right. We decided to ask our McTimoney guy to check her over - he did and diagnosed pain in her lower back (well, near her pelvis). He treated her the once and two days later she was sound and din't go lame again! This was after several weeks of vet visits/x-rays etc. They just focused on the lame front leg though (as they would), he looked for where the issue was originating from.

I also had a pony with bad problems last year and he treated him too and the change was remarkable.

I had a Mctimoney lady out to my mare, she assessed my mare and was at my place for a good two hours. Although she found no major issues with my mare and only tweaked a few areas, she gave her a massage all over. My mare fell asleep and was snoring by the end, was worth every penny just to see my old girl so relaxed. I would also add I found my mare moved more free when ridden, and at the age of 24 she deserves check up and massage every 6 months.

Such therapys (equine touch is another ) make horses feel better , the areas they highlight can you you insights into how your horse works and why it finds something's harder to do than others,
However and it's a big however they are not trained like a ACPAT physio is and they are not vets they canot diagnose problems and should not be used when the horse is not right that's the job for a vet working if necessary with an equine
Physio.
So I think it's nice for a hard working horse but then so is a visit from a ACPAT physio so I stick to a physio now .

I swear by mine. She's great and has turned mediocre horses into really nice ones just by freeing them up. You can feel the difference when you next ride them.

Thanks guys - all really interesting. I hadn't even thought of having to have vets permission for a treatment so something else to take on board.
