What do think of this stallion?

nice but not that impressive

I agree. Looks nice enough but there's not much about him, hardly any pictures, and he doesn't seem to have done anything special yet.

he looks ok-nicely marked show horse.doesnt have any results yet though, which would put me off.
dont think much of his movement from those pics(as a dressage sire) and would like to see a good one of him standing side on.

doesn't say he's homozygous for the tobiano gene which would be his main asset if he were - otherwise there's a 50% chance of a plain coloured foal. If he were bay, would you be looking at him?

He isn't so far I think he has had 86% coloured foals and no I probably wouldn't have spotted him if he were bay although I still think he would be nice. I saw him in H&H last week (I think) and he looked much better, the pics on the website don't make him look anything special. Now we have a mare I would like to think about breeding ourselves a nice foalie in the future although I want to find one that will minimise her bad points .

which means they've been very lucky

horses are either homozygous, in which case 100% coloured
or

heterozygous, in which case, statistically, each foal has a 50% chance of being coloured if put to a plain coloured mare. (if to a coloured mare, then the odds change depending on the mare, obviously)

so.... probably better reasons to pick a stallion

and someone is going to say this, so I'll say it as softly as possible - but if your mare has bad points, should you be breeding from her at all? The world doesn't need more horses and there are already an awful lot out there being produced from good mares and good horses

having said which, of course there's something truly special about having your own foal and bringing it up, as long as you have the time to do it right

E

I understand what you are saying and this would be to breed a horse to keep, most horses have some bad points but obviously if she had some horrendous conformation problem then I would never even consider it. The best yu can do is choose a stallion who has strong points where yours has weak and try to make an improvement
