Someone once tried to ride in a Hunting Pony class I was stewarding...... and it was 15.2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems to be wildly variable. My daughter was entered on the spur of the moment by someone else for "the next class". After she'd jumped a double clear they announced that it was the open PONY class - which was an embarrassment as he measures 15.1 at the withers - but his bum is only 14.2. I told her if she won a prize she could go in but must apologise and tell them that it was a mistake to enter and to move the prizes up a place. To my horror I watched her accept her third place rosette and the money and then canter round the ring. When I asked her what she thought she was doing she pointed out that her horse was the smallest "pony" in the line up and she didn't see why she should hand it back.

So although I'd normally check the schedule and would expect pony classes to be for 14.2 and under the sizes of the 14.2s seems to be wildly variable.

Technically it should be 14.2 or 148cm but I don't think I've ever seen an actual 14.2 in the right class. I had a pony who was about 13.3-14hh and she was small in the 13.2 class. People seem to be very keen on 'full-up' 14.2s which basically means its about 15hh. Its madness really.

Yea but does it have a horses stride or a pony stride, gonna make a difference in the riding performance, turn on a sixpence pony or fanny around pretending it's got long legs horse when it's not

I guess unless its a BSJA class where they have to measured then its very difficult to monitor which are ACTUALLY ponies!

But to be honest, ponies are always at an advantage IMO anyway, they are usually far nippier than the bigger ones

I was very doubtful our 14.2 would measure, but she did without any 'tricks', because she either is or isn't. When we are at BSJA comps, she is nowhere near as big as some.........
