I suspect this is a numpty question but where do you tack up in the rain at a show?

I have a 3.5 tonne lorry and was thinking about how to do it and can't work it out.

Do you put the bottom half of the ramp up and tack up somehow in the lorry? Or just tack up outside in the rain?

Do you put your horse back in lorry with partition across etc?

Sorry I think I'm being an idiot!

Don't have a 3.5T, just have a 7.5T and, if only 1 horse then pretty easy to tack them up inside. If 2, it's a bit harder though!! I am assuming in a 3.5T, if side load thenyou could open the ramp and open the partition but keep the horse tied up and tack up like that? Depends on the horse i guess.

I always tack up un the lorry anyway, we normally only had one so it was easy to just open the partition and I could tack and boot up all round, and then just stick studs in once he was off (I use travel studs so it only takes a couple of mins to change them). He was rarely tied to the lorry, he was either being ridden or on the lorry.

I have a 3.5t and yes, i leave the ramp up but move the partition across so I can move round. This probably wouldn't work with two decent sized horses in there as it would be too tight a fit - but two 15hh or more horses and you'd most likely be over the payload in a 3.5t anyway (which is a whole different thread!). I actually always tack up/get the horses ready in the lorry as I feel safer that way, too many experiences of people driving past too close, trotting past too close or running past on foot too close to horses being held or tied outside!

We always tack up in the lorry. If it's raining heavily then he stands on the lorry during classes/ phases with a haynet, and is offered water if he's got a long wait. If the lorry isn't an option (only a short while to wait, so booting up would take the time up!) then he wears his full neck waterproof sheet.

Ive worked on both a dressage yard and an event yard and would regularly groom at shows. Both employers expected me to tack up on the lorry, studs and all! Not the most easiest of tasks! I now tack mine outside normally, I've not been caught in the rain yet, but would probably try and tack up on board. My mare gets fidgety though so it might be too hard to!

I have a trailer and my horses travel cross tied without the partition so plenty of room to tack up in the trailer.

My 3.5T is realy only big enough for my one horse, and he travels herringbone in it. So at shows, rain or shine, he gets tacked up inside. I drop the ramp, swing the partition open and allow him to face out the ramp. I can then reach everything really except his tail, which is in the drivers side corner. He stands really politely while I tack up, polish him up and then I can take him from his "dressing room" ready to go!
