what do you guys do when your horse has been out in the rain and his rug is soaked? (not soaked right through!)

everyone at my yard does something different.. some take their rugs off then put them back on the next day still wet, some change them into a lighter/heavier rug and others leave them on so that theyll dry quicker while on the horse.

i tend to do the latter, but if i know they wont be out the next day i just change him into his stable rug.

just a curiosity more than anything!

Depends on what you mean by the rug being soaked. If it is wet on the outside it stays on. If it's wet on the inside and horse's skin is wet then rug comes off, horse is dried out by thatching or with a fleece and the rug changed for a dry one.

Provided the rug is dry on the inside, I'll leave it on to dry. I tend to use T/Os even when stabled over night anyway.

If the rug has leaked, I dry the horse and then put on a dry one.

If I'm going to ride, so the rug is being removed I'll put a dry one on, and hang the other to dry, but won't use it again till dry (even if it take a few days), as have plenty of spares.

I take it off because the stable rug is lighter than a wet rug and more comfortable.

Currently, I don't have anywhere to hang the wet rugs in a place with enough of a breeze to dry them overnight so they get a different turnout rug to wear the next morning.

this is a problem i also have so its another reason i just leave the wet ones on!

Yes, its a pain. Used to have a stable outside a covered passageway. It was like a wind tunnel and dried everything quickly.

A friend used to take her wet rugs home and dry them and return a warmed rug next morning for her elderly TB. Such a softie.:D

Doing both but then I have only had her since Saturday and its not rained much :o

She came in dry last night so I left her T/O rugs on as it was my first 'real' morning this morning and it saved a few minutes which is always a good thing when i need to be in work for 0800 which is an hour away from the yard :)

I think going forward I will be leaving the T/O rug(s) on if they are dry underneath. As long as she is groomed and checked over each evening then I'm happy to do it that way :D
