I once made a bridle out of plaited twine 
those wide 9 string plaits - and I actually plaited veterinary cotton wool stuff in to the headpiece to make it comfier (somehow) 
it did get wet and go rotten and gross though so it got chucked but it was great at the time! I never actually used it but it looked cool
