What do you do with your Cobs?

My horsey preferences seem to have gone all weird.
I started wanting a foal, then a Standardbred, then an ex race horse and finally I've decided on a Gypsy Cob.

What do you do with yours? Do you in-hand show? Jump? Endurance? Hack? Dressage?

(Of course, I'm not 100% on a cob, I'm just looking for my perfect horse...who knows, I might end up with something completely different! Just interested to know :))

My coloured cob is only 3 and currently unbacked. I hope he Will make a nice allrounder. Want to do prelim and eventually novice dressage. Id like to do showjumping at 60 and 70cm. Mini odes and possibly some hunter trials.
I Will also hack out.

Ooh cool :)
I'd only really NEED it for hacking, but I think when I get my own, I might want to venture into other disciplines ^^ Interested to see what everyone else does :D

Wellllll....... we're mainly Happy Hackers really, but have done the following:

Fun Rides
TREC
Horse Agility

In addition, mine has performed duties as "Nanny" to other scattier horses when needed; plus can also pop a round of jumps (if he feels like it); and does a decent'ish dressage test (again when disposed, not otherwise).

Before I had him I was told he'd been used in harness as well, but I've not done that with him.

Traddie cobs really are very versatile.

A cob can do everything. Mine is not a gypsy cob, being black with white socks and hogged etc, but the concept is the same. In our 7 years together we have done dressage to a fairly good standard, won out showing, hunted plenty, gone showjumping and done xc. I have also taken him on numerous riding holidays with friends, which he loves. With my daughter he has competed on PC teams and has done numerous PC rallies and has even gone to PC camp when her mare was off games due to an injury. He is now 18 and I work all hours god sends, so we mainly hack to keep him ticking over. If I have more time I would like to do some more dressage with him as he did love it. For some reason he knew what white dressage boards were for, and he used to grow from a 14.3 little cob to a 16.2 warmblood with the paces to match.

A good cob is worth its (considerable) weight in gold. I love them. Thery are not all dopes on a rope - mine certainly is not, even at getting on for 19, though he is a safe and reliable hack. They are also not so precious as a lot of horses, ie warmbloods, TBs etc (and I own a warmblood/TB, so am qualified to say this). live on fresh air. can live out and dont require loads of rugs. Their feet are brilliant - I have only had 3 lost shoes in 7 years which isnt bad going and all of those lost shoes were when he needed shoeing anyway. I think they have fantastic characters as well as most of the cobs I have known have been very, um opinionated and lots of fun to ride. When my cob goes to the rainbow bridge, I will definitely have another one.

Mine's not a gypsy gob but would looklike one with all her feathers :p she has done LDR, XC, HT, SJ, DR, Le trec and low level showing all with good success :) she's jumped a course of 1m20 with me :)eek: i was petrified) but i used to love going into the ring and have people snigger about how she was an ugly cob and then I'd beat them and we'd have a snigger :p Go on Get a cob, there's an abundance of them and they need loving homes :);)

I'm lovin' all the pictures :D
This is really helping me make up my mind about what I want!

My perfect horse: Something that can jump 2ft 6 (That's as high as *I* want to go, if the horse can do bigger, great!), something that will gallop and come back to me, something that hacks safely, doesn't buck (I can handle rears, but would prefer not haha), something that I can travel with :)

Sounds like something a Cob could easily do!

I've seen a few nice looking, cheap ones on Dragon Driving, but I know what y'all think of that place :p I know I'm not meant to be looking untill the summer, but can you point me in the direction of any places to buy? PM me if you like :)

I hack, dressage, show and my friend takes her jumping. I also spend lots of £££ on shampoo, keeping the white bits clean.

She is no plod :D, but has not a shred of nastiness either. She just thinks she's a racehorse. :D

I only hack out on my mare, but before I bought her she was a rent a cob for hunting. She is forward going can take her anywhere and she wont show me up, 100% in everyway you would want a horse to be. I bred 1 foal from her and she gave me a lovely spotted filly, she is perfect for me. I just wish that she was young again as she is 23 next year, and although we still go out on our hacks, it would be lovely to do it all over again with her :D

Aw, she's lovely :)

I feel that way about my dog. She's 13 now and shows her age quite a bit. I used to sneak her into the park and do a mini-agility :p She LOVED it! I did it so much, I'd just point and she'd do it all in order. I would also set up 'show jumps' in my garden and she'd love that too.
It's upsetting to see animals get old, but at least we got some great years with them :D

Appreciate the 13 years you've had with her. That's a whole decade more than I got with my boy.

Thanks for that!

I thought it illustrates how easy he is to hack - you don't even need to watch where you're going ;)

Thanks, he's perfect to me, but I'm extremely biased :D

JustFindingTheDecorations - I love, love, love your coblet!

I do a bit of everything with mine. We used to show but we both find it a bit dull plus pony hates staying clean and I hate bathing him.

We do a bit of dressage, sj and XC - only at RC level so far but hoping to do some BE80 next year as he trained over a couple of the courses this year and coped ok.

I also love hacking so hoping to do some endurance rides this year.

I do find that being quite chunky it can be hard to keep him fit. He's also not the most natural jumper and many instructor have explained is due to his "type" so maybe worth bearing these things in mind.

Some pics of him in action

Cobs are fabulous and beautiful, intelligent, kind and foregiving. My 4yr old has done some dressage classes this year, ridden classes in hand coloured classes, fun rides as well as hacking out. He`s also been out with the local bloodhounds and the local foxhounds. Nothing fazes him. Another bonus especially on long rides is the armchair ride he gives and the lovely steady rocking horse canter.
A cob will have a go at anything you fancy really.( although i would give point-to-point a miss lol!) Then the added bonus is that they are so easy to keep and such good doers.

We mainly hack but have done dressage, showing, XC and a bit of jumping.

My boy is a star and I like you was really unsure before I went for a cob - was looking for a hunter!!!

Hopefully once the trauma of this year is over we'll be out doing all these things again!
