What do you do with your deceased/retired horses belongings?

Just wondering what people do with all the stuff they've got over the years.

My lady is retired but has a fantastic saddle and two bridles which we've had 8 years now but I just couldn't bring myself to sell it. It was specially made for her so I doubt it has much use for any other horse. And rugs, I don't think I could even get rid of any of them... :/
Maybe I'm a horse stuff hoarder.
 
I kept Misty's saddle after she retired...good thing too, as she later came out of retirement for some gentle hacks. I've got her rugs up for sale now (she died august 2011) but her tack is still in my room. It's worth more to me in sentiment than I would get if I sold it, saddle probably wouldn't make £50.

I sold Harry's tack, he had a nice saddle, wasn't any point letting it go to waste. I put the money from selling his stuff into premium bonds so it would be hard to access. they've won me £75 so far, which is well over the odds for how many I have!
 
I gave my rugs to a horse charity & felt a bit better thinking another horse would benefit from them.

Sold my saddle & put the cash towards new bits for my new mare.
 
Sell, give to charity and or friends. I have my photos, my memories, videos on youtube, and some lovely horse hair jewellery, I don't need the tack cluttering the place up when is can be converted to cash.
 
I lost my mare in january - I still have all of her things and I keep meaning to chose a couple of special things and then rehome/sell the rest, but I just don't feel up to it at the moment.
 
Sold it, or kept it for the new horses who it fitted.

I don't think I, or my mum/ sister, are very sentimental over tack or rugs. My memories are in my head. All I need is a photo of the horse and they all come flooding back.
 
I sold most of it. The way I see it is that it is a shame to leave good tack gathering dust in the attic or wherever when someone could enjoy it and get good use out of it.

I did kick myself for selling the rugs though, my girl was 16hh and a 6'3" and I never thought I would have another "big" horse of 16hh or more - got my welsh D at 14.2hh and yep - you guessed it he's 6'3" due to his big shoulders!!
 
I gave away all of Obi's stuff to other liveries, the YO and the rest to WHW.

I started sorting it all out before he was PTS as I didn't want to have to do it all afterwards.

The only thing I have kept from the 22 year's worth of stuff is his headcollar and lead rope.
 
I have a bridle which was custom made for a mare about 20 yrs ago. It has had a bigger noseband and a bigger browband added and is now being worn by the third horse - I quite like the continuity.
 
I've either used it on new horse or kept it. I'm a year on so really need a sort out as have saddles that new boy won't ever grow into and about 5 Boett rugs that a charity would be glad of.

New boy is wearing her rugs even though they are a bit roomy. I'm a tight cOw tho! A summer job methinks - get everything outside and see what can go where.
 
Most things get sold on. The only thing ive got from child hood horses and my daughters outgrown ponies is personalised numnahs and name plates. The cupboard above the wardrobe in my bedroom has them stored in.
 
sold most except her bridle and saddle - both of which i could raise a good £700 from which, i wont lie i could use righ tnow. i did put them up for sale but i know i cant sell (so glad ive got no interest)!

sold all rugs etc as theres no way id put and use them on another horse.
 
I only had a few things from my last horse as he was a part loan but had him 2 and 1/2 years.
His girth fits my mare (bought her start of march and came with nothing so was handy the girth fitted) and so will his white saddle pad but his head collar and custom velvet brown bands where his and his alone and won't be used on another horse :)
 
I kept my bridle and it's hanging on the wall in my kitchen I've sold everything else. If you managed to keep a lock of his tail you could have it made into a bracelet with the money. Saddles are expensive and large things to keep around unused but I'd def keep the bridle! Rugs I gave to horse charities where they'd be appreciated!
 
Ive been deliberately using some of her stuff on my others so I hope to be able to keep using some of it. I'll keep her name plate and an embroidered saddle cloth but anything else will go to charity. I sold the stuff I don't need while she's here so that I could bear to do it!
 
I lost two old boys on Monday. I sorted all there stuff before hand and rugs went to a friend who runs a racehorse rehab yard as they will look after them, grooming kit went to a friend, tack was shared but one retired years ago so i sold his stuff Years ago, they both were left with there smart head collars and ropes and there everyday ones and one of there special brushes are hung up in my house, my current 3 horses are much bigger or i would of left the rugs for them x
 
Everything just gets used on other horses.
Saddles are stored until the next time I need them if I like them sold if not.
 
My friend gave all of her horses many pristine FAL rugs to world horse welfare, they were overwhelmed as she had about 30 and all like new.

It made her feel much better once she had done it, even though it was tough at the time.

I would give any bits etc to the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust, look at their website to see why - any that are too big for their working horses and donkeys they give to the working horse charity SPANA. That's the way they can do absolutely the most good of all.

I would probably sell saddles.

I wouldn't want to keep stuff apart from a couple of momentous like a piece of mane or tail and an old shoe from when my big chap used to be shod, he's barefoot in retirement but I have some of his old shoes.
 
Used saddle on new horse, then she changed shape so had to sell it, sold one rug, and have to say kept everything else. I just can not bring myself to get rid of things even after all this time.
 
Sold a lot of it or kept it for new horse. It's good to hoard! When my first ever horse was pts I gave a lot of his stuff away to friends as I thought I wouldn't ever have another horse that big. 12 months later I did and had to buy it all over again.
 
I keep EVERYTHING in true hoarder style because you never know when you mite need it or someone needs to borrow something. Luckily i have enough outbuildings to accomodate! Over the years ive accumulated a truely impressive amount of stuff ill possibly never use again! :(
 
I knew I'd be getting another horse after Kelly died, and I knew it would be of similar size, so I kept everything till it had been tried on Sham, and sold the good stuff and gave away the not-so-good stuff that didn't fit. Equipment takes up too much space and costs too much to hang on to for sentimental reasons!

The only thing I've put away was the headcollar and lead rope Kels was wearing when she first arrived.
 
When catchie was pts I couldn't face sorting anything. Then when kenny arrived a month later and I had to face the music, I kept everything that would do for kenny and sold the rest and put the money towards what I had to buy new. The only thing I kept that wouldn't do for kenny was his head collar and leadrope and the rug he was pts in. There is nothing wrong with the rug but it didn't feel right selling it to someone else. Maybe that's just me?
 
Can't face thinking about sorting out my mare's stuff just yet. Only just managed to face washing her rug. Both saddles sitting on the arm of the sofa in the kitchen. Jumping saddle should really be sold but am hoping the dressage saddle will fit her son (Four Seasons), eventually. Bridle is being used on her son, girths etc on Breitlingh.
Still also have the tub with her ashes sitting in the corner of the kitchen.:(
 
I sold some things. Kelsi's saddle fitted our new horse perfectly, the saddler said we were really lucky! I gave her bridle to a friend for her cob as I know it will be looked after and used. I sold the rugs. I have kept her xl leather head collar, it doesn't fit any of our horses but reminds me of Kelsi.
 
My tb was on loan when he died (not loaners fault) so sje kept the saddle she had bought for him but all the things he went with came back to me and put inot use for our other horses. Luckily they are all the same size so far as rugs etc went
