What do you do with your dogs when at work?

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a dog and was wondering what people do if you work full time and have a dog? Do you leave it at home in the day time?

Thanks

I work every day from 9-2.30. I have 3 dogs that are all left outside all day with access to kennels and a heated garage with carpets and beds. I take them all for a good walk when I get back and my OH takes them again in the evening. They are all happy and settled when I leave for work. Not sure if I would be happy leaving just one dog alone. Because I have 3 they keep each other company and play during the day.

I would love a dog - but haven't got one because I think it's totally unfair to leave it in the house all day on its own. I leave for work at 7.30 and then go and do the horses in the evening straight from work.

Realistically it's just not possible for me, and would be unfair on the dog.

I work from home so im always around for my babies! I have seen ones advertising in the paper for "carers" for dogs while the owner is away at work.

Before my husband and I were leaving the house around 8am, coming home around 5pm. The dogs were fine, but then we do have a good size garden and hubby came home at lunch time to check on them and give them their lunch.

I wouldnt advise that you leave a young dog for too long, however an older dog would be the best bet for you.

We work and we try to make sure our hours fit in with the dog, so I get up at 4.30am to be with the dog until I leave for work at 7. During that time I take him out for a walk/play for about an hour although some days we lose track of time and it ends up being an hour and a half. My OH gets up at 7am and then he leaves for work at 8.30. Our dog has a run with toys and food to stimulate him through the day although usually he has his main sleep then (we know because when we are at home with him he goes and puts himself to bed around 9ish) I then get home from work around 3.30 til 4 and he spends time around me. My husband then usually takes him out for an hour either at nine or ten. Eventually the dog goes to bed at around midnight.

You need to be careful with what breed of dog you get.

Also remember that if a dog is distracted and happy he won't be destructive so make sure your dog has things to stimulate him.

Emma
