Hey everyone, considering buying a Fell - not into showing at the moment but would be nice to know what options we would have in the future, aside from M&M classes :D

My Fell was a show pony, happy hacker and hunting pony. He even went out with the racehorses a couple of times. They are very versatile and yet easy to look after. There was one that went out pony racing this year and did very well. The Duke drives a team of them, the Queen rides out on one. You won't ever regret buying a Fell pony.

It's funny you should say that - if all goes well I'd love to have a go at hunting this year. From what I can gather they can turn their hoof to most things which is exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks for the reassurance EKW

A fair few do endurance too. There is no end to their talents.

The Murthwaite Stud are having a major stud reduction and are holding a sale on the 4th of July. Mostly unbroken broodmares and uncovered young mares but if you have the time, patience and experience to break and bring on your own then I am sure you will find a good bargain there.

Thanks but I wouldn't feel comfortable with an unbroken one, maybe in the future! Do you know anything about Lownthwaite (sp?)...I've seen a mare that I like, 7, think she may have had a foal but is now ridden and seems to tick all my boxes. Haven't been to see her yet but she looks perfect.

Thats interesting, is it advertised anywhere ? Ive had a quick google but cant spot anything ..

Never owned one but of 2 that are local to me one does well dressage, prelim and I think now novice and the other draghunts, that one is hogged and clipped out so unless you were told you'd mistake it for a very smart little cob.

The Murthwaite Stud reduction has a group on Facebook that they are putting pics of ponies up on.

Lownthwaite ponies - BUY HER! My lad was a Lownthwaite and a more genuine lovable pony you never get! He was forward going but not strong or ott. Some Fells can be very slow and lazy but the Lownthwaite's are a nice combinatiom of safe and forwards! I would have another Lownthwaite in a heartbeat! They also tend to have very pretty heads!

They'll do anything! Mine is out at BD prelim and novice, we've also done showing, mini-ODEs, pony camp, hacking, workers, jumping etc. There is one out there pony racing, a few at elementary dressage, seen a fair few pics of some out hunting and doing endurance, plus driving trials and I think one has done a BE80! You can't put a fell pony to the wrong job (I may be slightly biased!).

Lol, well that sealed the deal - I've arranged to go and see her on Thursday! I'm unbelievably excited :D I'll make sure to post an update afterwards

A gratuitus pic of my late pony - taken 10 years ago now! Lownthwaite Jasper.

That was his first time jumping hence the miniscule jump lol! That picture has travelled the world up on bilboards in NYW, Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, Berlin, London to name but a few. Jasps was one of the greatest and best ponies I have ever had.

Both mine are Lownthwaites, both 4 so not working properly yet but are a real delight to work with on the ground, very intelligent and my mare in particular is incredibly fast to learn - I'm sure she's done it all before!! Christine and Alison are lovely too so if you do get a Lownthwaite then get in touch with them via fb, Im sure they would love to hear from a new owner.
Alison does showing, driving, hacking and dressage with her own ponies, mine are heading towards ride and drive doing anything that takes my fancy. They can be sensitive souls though, they respond better to kindness and a partnership than bullying - I am sure a lot of the "stubborn" trait people talk about with them is more a strong sense of self-preservation - give them a little time to trust you and see that things are ok and they will do anything with you.
