As title says really. I show welsh cobs so daren't wear a hat (unless riding hat for youngster) as they can blow off too easily when running that fast, but I have long ish hair and am never 100% happy with how I do it for shows. I do a bun and use either a black net clip or hairnet (just on the bun) but I have layers and these either fall down and look scruffy or I end up givign myself a really harsh look overdoing hairspray!

Anyone have similar issues and got a solution??

Ive always worn a hat in the ring as it is rude not to i was always taught.
Id stick to your hat and a bun

.. but I can't ever remember seeing any welsh handlers either local or county or at HOYS even with a hat on, except youngstock?

Isn't a hat - a hard one - more for the likes of a hack, TB etc?

What does everyone else think? I'm convinced I shouldn't be wearing a hat of any sort but very interested in opinions and pics!

I've always worn a hard hat even in hand showing welsh. My friend shows her C and wears a trilby type hat and has put some elastic on the hat like a chin strap, but instead of having it under the chin, puts it behind/under the bun so it keeps the hat secure.

I have really long thick hair and so tend to put it in a French plait for just about any sort of competition (hairnets just look messy with my hair as there is too much of it!) I do it really tight and then turn the "tail" over a few times to make a neat bun shape at the bottom - when it was a bit shorter I'd plait it a little looser at the back (not on top though) and would use a needle and thread to pull the tail up under the plait at the back and ask mum or OH to sew it in place for me but now its too long even for that!

I think it looks really smart and tidy, especially if I plait it when wet with a generous amount of serum on it as it stays smooth without any straying hairs. When I were a hat I have sewn a few hair pins to the inside and catch my hair with them when I put the hat on so hat stays put too or if wearing a beagler the extra volume from the plait on my head makes it really snug so there is no way it will budge (I made sure my hair was plaited when I purchased it to make sure it would fit).

I am hoping to do a couple of in-hand shows this year with my new youngster, and I think I might buy a beagler or use my navy Charles Owen hat with the leather straps. I'll probably be doing hunter classes, so not sure how correct that will be?! I guess for the 1st show I'd prefer to have the straps!

RE hair, I use straightening balm which is very good for smoothing and keeping the hair together (without making it rock hard!) along with kirby grips.

Naturally, I will come and see how you do it and take a peek at the competition!
