What do you do with yours?

Wood or straw pellets. Do you damp them or put them down dry? I’m planning to use them under shavings bed for a very wet mare- not just a patch, but 2 large areas of wet. I’ve been putting them in dry but find I’m throwing out a lot of dry pellets. Also, would you put the pellets just in the wet areas and how deep? Thanks if you’ve any experience of what works!

Any time I’ve used them, I’ve soaked them first - otherwise my horse thinks they are food

I’d do the whole floor, maybe 4 inches deep or so, then shavings on top. Try and leave the pellet base undisturbed as much as you can, skim off the wet bits when they start to surface.

This is what my yard uses.. pretty sure it’s wood pellets. I’m sure they are soaked before use, so they turn into an almost sand like consistency.

Sorbio wood pellets, soaked in the opened up flat bag until fluffy, then spread where needed.

In my experience of straw pellets, StrawMax need a bit of water first otherwise they're tasty. SunEBed don't need water.

ETA I use them for the wet bit under a straw bed, not on their own.

I currently use wood pellets but have done the same for straw pellets too. When setting up a bed I put the base down maibly dry and then soaked pellets on top.

Weekly or fortnightly I put some in unsoaked directly to fill in the hole from the wet I've dug up. I then use the current bedding on top of the unsoaked pellets. Then I soak some new pellets and spread that on the top layer of the bed to bulk the bed out.

Thanks for your ideas everyone- I think I’ll need to put a good, deep base down as suggested.
