Inspired by the name of the forum :-) I was thinking I always used to be focused on competing when younger, but since getting back into horses and having moved my boy from my own place to a lovely new yard with amazing facilities and trainers, I get such a buzz from my lessons and seeing how much we improve week on week at home. Instead of spending money on competitions I enjoy spending it on training and on lovely matchy matchy for training :-)

What do you focus on more ?

Training for me as love my lessons and seeing improvement. I only go to a few competitions and they are just outings more than anything.

Training :) Love seeing a horse get stronger and improve. I really loved seeing my ex racer's shape improve as he built the correct muscles, and now starting to do that with the baby is very rewarding.

I do enjoy competing, but think training is more interesting.

Training. I don't get to compete very often anymore and although I enjoy it and am desperate to do more, I love having lessons and then working on any problems we find or any exercises I've been shown. Even though my horses are older now I do enjoy working them in the school more than hacking out but I enjoy using hacking in their training to achieve whatever goal be it fitness or confidence.

Competing for me. I really only have horses to compete, although currently I have 3 expensive field ornaments and one who is only up to low level dressage nowadays (and I HATE dressage!) :( I like to have events to aim for with my training. I don't get an adrenaline rush from training, like I do from XC or doing a speedy SJ jump off.

Training I think.

I love competing too but mainly as I like to look back and see how much we have progressed.
I think I like competing so much as it gives me aims and I can benchmark how we are doing.

Training for me too although I love to compete too and if I didn't compete I probably wouldn't enjoy training so much as I really like /want / need something to work towards. They kind of go hand in hand no?

Training as well for me I think too! I do like going out for the day out aspect and the buzz of doing well, I get itchy feet if I dont go out for a while but I'm happy achieving something at home :). If I couldn't compete I would still ride, it's my sanity and good endorphin release!

I actively dislike competing -because I don't feel like I ride as well in a competition environment, and always beat myself up for being useless after competitions. I love training, going to clinics and having lessons, but would never choose to compete - I'd have to be forced!

A love of both for me. Love training and progressing and I use competing as a means of testing what we have learnt - if we go out competing and have a lovely time and all goes well then that's a brilliant day for me, if you happen to get placed or win in the process that's always a nice bonus
