what do you feed your 2 year olds?

Ad lib haylage, dengie hi fi light (one scoop twice daily) cup of spillers original balancer twice a day. Speedie beet in the winter. He is out 24/7 (except when injured!) and has come through the winter well even though all our grass was gone by January.
The new grass will soon be through and help them put on more weight. If they look poor I would make sure they are having enough hay/haylage. The people in breeding are very helpful with this kind of advice.

A good vits and mins supplement eg. D&H Suregrow and Alfa A. Mine are turned out 24/7 and get hayed at night.

I don't want them to grow too quickly as I think this leads to long term soundness issues.

My 2 year olds get a VERY generous ration of good quality haylage am and pm. Plus min/vit supplement. That's it! They are all perfectly porky on that! (For those who don't know, they're either pure-bred Irish Draughts - or ID Sport Horses.) The biggest are already over 16hh - I don't want elephants - or developmental disorders!

Well mine is rising 2 this may and is out 24/7 with hay morning and night and two feeds a day - more to keep him happy than anything else. He gets a standard coarse mix, some alfa a and sugar beet and they have access to a mineral lick in the field. He loves his hay and grass though more than anything I think! I have thought he's dropped a bit of weight the last few weeks but I think much of that is down to growing as well as the grass now being pretty depleted. I think all will change in a couple of weeks when they get put on the other field!

^^^^^This. Mine are WB/TB/ID types and if haylage is good enough its plenty. I also put a tub of lick in the field. If you start feeding loads of concentrates you are asking for trouble like OCD later on. If s/he's dropped off a bit then be brave, grass is round the corner!

I fed my boy suregrow and chaff with a little sugarbeet in winter. Haylage. The vet at his vetting TOLD me not to overfeed:D

just interested, particularly something that puts weight on.

Do you mean a feed that will put weight on a two year old?

Or

A two year old who is a good doer???!

My two year old Cleveland bay (BIG!) was and still (as a 4 year old) is on a cup of high fibre cubes, handfull of hi-fi lite, half a scoop speedi beet and equivite original supplement.

he also (most importantly IMO) gets as much hay as he can eat.

Like JG I don't want to risk OCD. Been there done that. Not nice.

^^^^this, he just gets ad-lib hay (good quality) and supplements, turned out 24/7, and he looks brilliant on it, he is a Welsh x TB.

Mine is rising 3 and doesnt keep his condition well. He is in at night and out during day (fairly good grazing). Has ad lib good quality hay at nite (2/3 of bale) then has two feeds of fast fibre (1.5 mugs), speedibeet (1.5 mugs), blue chip and linseed (1.5 mugs).

He is 15.2hh atm and has grown steadily (WB*TB should make 16.0-1hh). He has come out of this winter looking the best he has before (evein if slightly under still :-( ) so think (fingers crossed) we have found the balance!

mine is rising 3 and he has standard mix, ossi chaff and beet, hay and haylage as much as he wants twice a day is in in at night at moment and he tends to do well on this
