Hi there,

Just really an afterthought from my 'anorexic dog' post earlier, I just wondered what people fed there hounds?? I would be especially interested in people following the raw food diet and how this works out financially?? Thanks again : )

I feed my three ickle greyhounds on raw. I changed their diet because of their appalling teeth, and it has improved their teeth about 200% in a very short time :):)

I have noticed however that it is not easy to keep condition on them when feeding raw, even though I feed over the recommended amount? I am even thinking I might swap Islay back to Skinners Duck and Rice, on the basis that she has had most of her teeth extracted already :D

It is working out very costly for me, probably double the amount which all in one cost me, but that is because I dont have enough freezer space to order decent amounts from Landywoods, Berriewoods or similar. If I could do that, and could get chicken carcasses from the local factory, it would be loads cheaper :)

Barneys being tried on Iams dry chicken for large breeds first, if thats a no then it will be trial and error on different dry food! :D
Hoping to add eggs, chicken, sardines ect :)

i feed my whippys redmills racer/tracker
also if i can raw bones from butchers..free
raw rabbit.£1 per whole skinned and in portions from a neighbours who goes ferreting
eggs from own chickens
fruit and veg
sardines..a tin a week approx
goats milk
both have glossy coats, never clean their teeth..no need to,sparkly white
if fed completly on barf..poos dont smell and less freguently

Mine are on raw (use the sticky!)

The majority of their food is green tripe and chicken mince/carcasses. They have a variety of other meats/eggs added in. They do not get veg as I don't honestly reckon that they need it.

It's been a heck of a learning curve but this forum and this one http://www.petforums.co.uk/dog-health-nutrition/111437-raw-feeding-everything-you-need-know.html have been invaluable in helping me understand how and what.

In terms of losing weight, the main idea is give meat such as chicken leg meat to improve weight gain. We are doing it by eye, so big dog is getting 2.5% of his actual weight as he's a good doer. The pups are getting 6%, going down to 3% as they grow. :)

Meant to say: we survived using supermarkets for the first month but it's not ideal cos it's expensive.

We were very fortunate to source a greyhound feed supplier who does minced chicken and tripe and his cousin who does carcasses. Were I to start over, I would source first, feed after. It's cost us a ruddy fortune to start this but now it's fab. I'd never go back to commercial stuff unless it was something like Orijen, as pure as possible and protein rich. Sadly, you have to be rich to afford that for more than one dog!:)

Yellow Dog alternates between Baileys working dog, D&H working dog and Wagg working dog - he isnt a working dog but he eats them and thats good enough for us :D We tried him on loads of different things but hes so bloomin fussy and we can't feed him certain things - they dont upset his tummy. We tried him on raw and he nibbled at it but generally just stared at in in disgust - unless its freshly killed by him he wont eat it.

Green tripe with a plain biscuit - or just green tripe.

It really really stinks but the dogs love it and it's cheap. We've never had a problem with poorly tummies or dog's not eating

Carey, have you tried feeding pork? Dax adores pork ribs but I've had to cut them down to twice a week as she started to look quite plump on them. It's obviously a really fatty cut but the bone ratio is about right too.

Anyway, mine is also fed raw - pork ribs as above, chicken wings/legs/carcasses, cheap game in season, value mince, offal, scraps, fresh and tinned fish, eggs and veg (not convinced she needs it but she adores it) plus recreational beef and lamb bones. Anything with wheat, maize or rice gives her terrible diarrhoea so the only dry food I would use is Fish4Dogs but I've even cut that right down, maybe once a week max, as her poos are five times the size the next day. :o

Thanks for the tip BC, will try them all with some :)

With regards to feeding pork bones, raw I'm guessing, is there not a danger of tapeworm?

I feed mine Autarky

If you are worried about parasites, freeze raw meat for a few days first. This will kill potential parasites, although one would hope it wouldn't be present in human grade food!

Tassy is on Royal Cannin Maxi Mature- it is expensive at £47 per bag which lasts 6 weeks but she seems to do well on it and she also gets immuneAid and JointAid as she's a proper oldie and groans when she gets up and lies down. :(
