What do you feed your horses

1/3 scoop Alfa A Molasses Free
1/3 scoop Blue Chip Original
tbsp salt
glug oil

That's it - twice a day. Aside from reasonable grass and good quality hay. In the winter when the grass is a bit thin, we put hay out for them just to give them something to do/alleviate the boredom. Oh, and if it's really cold, and I think he needs a little more fibre/bulk to fuel his engine to keep himself warm, I give him Speedibeet (soaked in hot water and served warm).

I used to feed all sorts of complicated mixes, supplements, etc., but he does much better on non-molassed chaff and a balancer. Simples. The quality of horn in his feet and the shine on his coat are the best they've been since I bought him.

P

P.S. I do supplement this diet with seasonal hedgerow plants like nettles, cleavers, rosehips, cow parsley, etc.

Nothing!!!:eek: Mine get good quality haylage and that's it through summer. They are out all night and come in for a bit in the day time to get away from the flies. In winter I may feed a balancer unless a horse required some extra feed, which mine never have yet, unless they need drugs then I'll obviously put them in some feed.;)

I event and do British Dressage with mine and never have any problems and at one point had to put the eventer on hay instead of haylage as she got too daft!!

If feeding hay then defo feed a feed balancer....if haylage then you could have it analyised to save you money and just feed what you need to in order to give your horse a balanced diet.
IMO too many people make feeding too difficult .......keep it simple. :D

The cob gets...
Badminton Alfalfa Light (mollasses free)
Speedi Beet
Blue Chip
Handful of British Horse Feeds Veteran Mix
Naf Superflex

16.3hh TB/WB gets...
Badminton Alfalfa Light
Speedi beet
Blue Chip
BHF Veteran Mix
Naf Superflex
Global Herbs Alphabute
and also at the moment GH Restore

I won the Veteran Mix, but I won't be getting anymore I think. any ideas for the Tb/WB, as he needs a bit more energy, and drops condition in winter? He loves Veteran mix and it does encourage him to eat up! (He is 12 though!)

Buddy gets on top of his ad lib hay and good grazing:
1 scoop hi if original
1/2 -1 scoop of horse and pony cubes depending on workload
Twice daily

Plus a joint supplement and brewers yeast in his evening feed.

I feed speedibeet (or other unmolassed beet)
Bran
Coolstance Copra
Brewers Yeast
Linseed
Minerals balanced to forage.

I like feeding straights as I can adjust the quantities according to weight and work and the level of minerals stay the same even if I am only feeding token amounts of feed.

Many feeds have flavourings e.g. fast fibre which is otherwise very good has Fenugreek and Garlic neither of which I would choose to add. Plus alot of chaff based feeds contain soya and I think linseed is a better option if you need to feed oil.

Looking at the ingredients of pure easy basically it is assorted chaffs ( grass and straw), soya oil and their own balancer.

So if you were looking at an alternative you would have to add a balancer and oil to a chop which may not be any cheaper for you

PS I know I am safe to feed bran as the forage is high in calcium and low in phosphorous but wouldn't suggest anyone copies me

Unmollased sugarbeet
Mollichaff veteran (even for the non veteran as it really tempts the fussy eater)
Micronised linseed
365 complete balancer
Newmarket joint supplement

In winter/if needing condition or in harder work I might add wheat feed (middlings) but I tend to find the above in varying amounts is usually enough

Just moved mine onto baileys. Spotty boy is on the lo cal balancer with chaff and will add oats to it soon as well.
Thoroughbred is on performance balancer with chaff and she is fantastic off it!!! So shiny! Will maybe add their pencils to it over the winter if she struggles to maintain weight.

Both are on pretty much the same... Genie gets slightly less as she's such a good do-er.

Both currently out at night, in durng the day with a double-netted haynet.

Hard feed - 1 handful fast fibre, 1 handful chaff. Vits and Mins supplement added.

Simples!

Im changing my horses field this upcoming winter so something more simple. Im goign to use TopSpec Cool balancer as she gets fizzy all by herself, Dengie Mollasses free hi-fi & then speedi beat.
;Last year she was on a balancer (poweder form) chaff & topline cubes, but as the cool balancer is for topline muscle building it seemed easier to cut out the powder balancer and cubes!

Thank goodness I'm not the only one lol! My girls just been on grass and now is getting hay overnight as she's hasn't got much grass left. I regularly complete etc and show with good results. I find it amazing how many people still feed on my yard as most are overweight imo and then they wonder why their horses muck about perhaps it's something to do with the amount they feed!

have chopped and changed a lot over time but last season settled on
Baileys' Endurance Mix
A&P Power & Performance
Bailey's Outshine
TopSpec comprehensive balancer

Horse doesn't like chaff or sugar beet so he gets this combo all yr round as plenty of moisture in the A&P soaked feed so no need for sugar beet and Endurance Mix has a bit of alfalfa in it which he will tolerate. Find a cup of Outshine gives him a fabulous shine and balancer to make sure he gets everything he needs. He events in summer and hunts in winter. He is a good doer and is normally only fed once a day. He needs the feed to keep condition on as working pretty hard and also to give him the energy as despite being super sharp he can be quite lazy.

Youngster, 2yr old and retired mare have grass and hay in the field over summer with a pasture balancer in the field. 4yr old ID has half a scoop of high fibre cubes with linseed oil, protexin, suppleaze gold and a hoof and skin supplement and also pasture balancer in the field. 22yr old Welsh sec A has a handful of high fibre cubes in order to get him to take his pergolide. In winter they will all get high fibre cubes with oil and probably speedibeet and a molasses free chaff.

Mine is out 24/7 with grass hay available. He is currently in 5-6 days moderate level work.

He gets
200g lucerne chaff
2.5kgs whole oats
500g Equijewel
Cell vital (mineral mix)
Electrolytes

He is happy, round, and sane! Plus my bank balance is loving me, this is a very cheap feed!

Well my horse is allergic to the world and also suffers from liver enzyme issues.

We have to be picky with grazing her as she allergic to some of the grasses in fields etc.
So she has her grazing, hay made from certain types of grass (no haylage as she been allergic to it) and feed wise all she can have is speedibeet 1 stubbs scoop of soaked and half a stubbs scoop of barley. The barley is for her liver as is the speedibeet. She isnt allowed chaff as she chokes on it all the time. Allergic to soya, linseed, some grasses and lots of pollens.

Ah the joys of horses. lol

My old boy gets -
1 scoop Red Mills Cool N Cooked Mix
1/2 scoop Mollichaff showshine
1/2 scoop Speedibeet
2 cups of Blue Chip Original
1/2 cup of Corn Oil

three times a day in winter, and once a day in summer. He has ad lib haylage all winter (both in the field and in his stable) and in the summer is turned out 24/7 on good grass.

The competition horses and the hunters I have at livery with me are on a mixture of the above, with Red Mills Hioil Racehorse Mix, Hi-Fi Lite, Tiger Oats and boiled barley depending on what sort of oomph they need.

Of the three of mine who live out all year, two get 1/2 scoop Hi-Fi Lite and 1/2 scoop Speedibeet once a day in the depths of winter, with ad lib haylage in the field all winter, and the other is on 1 scoop Mollichaff Showshine, 1 scoop Speedibeet, 1/4 scoop Red Mills Cool N Cooked Mix and 1 cup of corn oil, twice a day all winter, with nothing in summer.

Feeding is a minefield. Everyone has brands and feeds that they like and trust, and some that they don't. It depends so much on the horse.

Good quality grass and ad lib hayledge.

Then they have a small Alfa-a and fibre cubes twice a day.

My boy who is events is also on conditioning cubes and pink powder.

In the winter they all get sugar beet especially anything that is hunting regularly :)

I must say I am GOBSMACKED at the amount and complexity of feed that nearly everyone is feeding. Perhaps I am blessed with the only uncomplicated good doers in the whole world? Mine all work, pretty hard in the summer, when they get, lets see....grass. In the winter, when they don't work so hard they get, mmm, hay.
