Personally I find the world of feeding completely confusing - but really interesting at the same time!
So I'd love to know your horse's vital stats, work level, what you feed, how much and why!

My three all live out and have access to haylage overnight. They each get a couple of biggish handfuls of happy hoof, then the two ponies (16 y.o. 13.1 sec C and 8 y.o. 14.1 mongrel!) get a basic vit/mineral supplement and my 6 y.o. TB has formula4feet and sunflower seeds. They're all in very light work atm.

(I'm sure this will have been asked before - sorry!

Mine gets fed similar to yours by the sound of things.
She gets 3-4 handfulls of happyhoof and normally formula4feet [feet are very crap].
Thinking about beefing it out with some pony nuts when she loses a bit more weight.

Mine is in overnight and is in light work. He is a 16.2hh sport horse. I feed him twice a day on pony nuts, alpha, and topspec. He also has as much haylage as I can force down his lovely little neck......

Beau is 6yrs old, 17.3hh and an ISH x WB.
he gets, per feed:

2kg Topspec cool condition cubes
Topspec Leisure Time feed balancer
Half stubbs scoop alfa oil
glucosamine
garlic
Linseed oil
Apples/Carrots if handy!

Lance is 16.2hh, 18yr old warmblood, good doer, he gets:

Half stubbs scoop D&H safe and sound
Glucosamine,
Linseed oil
Carrots/Apples.

They both live out, no hay in field yet, Beau is currently out of work, Lance is in light work.

Chloe is 15.2, 15 yr old shire x clydie. She is in at night and gets a large haylage net.
She is fed twice a day on a round scoop of safe & sound and a supplement for her skin. She's a very good doer, and we found that her energy levels weren't reduced when we took away her 'hard feed'.

Megan is 16hh 6 yr old chunky girl. She's also in at night but with ad-lib haylage. She's fed twice a day on a handful of hi-fi lite and a handful of pasture mix. I changed her from a similar feed to Chloe as I wanted to increase her energy levels, but not increase her fat. So now she's still slow, but shies more often.

She'll go back onto s&s over the summer when she's out 24/7.

both mine have half hay half haylage during the night when there in. And in the afternoon recieve a bucket of feed containing,
1 scoop hifi
1/2 scoop complete feed
2 handfuls of carrots
1 spoon of garlic
and thats all they have all year round (very good doers)

Oscar 17.1hh IDx something else
crazy.gif

Split between 2 feeds:
Topspec leisure time (cant remember the quantities but its 2 of their cups full)
D&H Alfalfa 3 large round scoops full
Magic calmer
Riaflex
Seaweed (garlic in the summer instead of this)
fruit/veg

ETS - as much hay as he can eat whilst hes in his bedroom overnight

both 12yo geldings, 16.2 and 16h. 16.2 is in med-hard work, 16h is in light work.

both get adlib hay and are turned out as much as poss. they only stay in over night if its really cold/wet/windy.

they then get (in 2 meals) 3kg AlfaA Oil, 4kg (wet weight) speedibeet, and 2 measures of naf GP supplement.

the 16.2 gets an additional 2kg Full Fat soya meal, the 16h gets only 0.5kg full fat soya meal.

this is a really simple diet, and when i switched to it last year, i half-ed my feed bill. admitedly my hay is cheap but it is good (£2.50 per bale delivered) and whats more they both eat it well.

i add electrolytes before and after hard/sweaty work, and the 16h gets a dose of tempralax before i take the other hunting, to help him cope with being alone.

i went into agriculture and nutrition because of how interesting i find feeding, and still love it!

Titan is a 14.2hh, 6yo coloured cob in medium work, weight is 425kg (ish). Ridden 6 days a week (schooling and hacking), hunted every other weekend in the winter, does showjumping/hunter trials/ODE/showing in the summer. Out 24/7 in summer, in at night during the winter but out for around 10-12 hours a day.

At the moment he has a scoop of Cherry chaff, 1/4 of Bailey's Topline, handful of black sunflower seeds, carrots & apples x twice a day, all watered down to mix it. He also has a scoop of garlic in the morning, egg in the evening.

In the summer he has half a scoop of cherry chaff, a handful of Topline, apple or carrot, sunflower seeds, 2 scoops of garlic and an egg only after he's been ridden.

He's just gone out in to a new field so is only eating 2 slices of hay in the night. He ate up to 4/5 last year as he was in for longer (lazy YO didn't turn out til 10.30/11

) and there was no grass in the field.

jay gets

ad lib hay
barley rings
speedi beet
Boss
showshine

fizz gets

ad lib hay
showshine
high fibre cubes
speedi beet
piriton tablets

Ali is a 16.1hh Danish Warmblood and is very hard to keep weight on. He's currently turned out during the day on good quality grazing, and is stabled at night and gets ad-lib hay. In the morning he gets a scoop of Gowla Cooked Mix, a scoop of beet pulp (just the standard soak overnight stuff, not Speedi-Beet), and some Baileys Outshine. In the evening he also gets a scoop of Gowla Cooked Mix, a scoop of beet pulp and some Baileys Outshine.

I've just given Gov's diet an overhaul as he came out in hives from cooked flaked barley.

He's now on Spillers Conditioning Fibre and Spillers Conditioning cubes. He gets about 10-12kg of haylage per night too.

Mine is on holdiday at mo, out 24/7 on not so great grazing. He gets 750g of Alfa A Lite, 750g (dry weight) of Alpha Beet and 550g of Topspec a day with cider vinegar. His diet will stay the same when in work over winter with inclusion of ad lib Hayledge when he comes in at night. In summer the Alfa A gets reduced down to a handful with no beet, and he gets Allen and Pag comp mix depending on levels of energy required, and his topspec.

5 yo ISH in light to medium work lives out 24/7 and good doer.

Alpha-A oil
Top Spec Leisure Time
Speedibeet
NAF Sarc-Ex

Currently one feed a day. Hay twice daily. When grass goes will get morning fibre feed.

The three I feed (although only Maiden is mine):
Maiden - 11yo, 15.3hh, should be 575kg (probably about 650kg at the mo
crazy.gif
). Not in work but recovering from a tendon injury and cartilage issues. She gets a scoop of HiFi Lite (only a scoop because otherwise she finished too quickly and steals everyone else's food!), two and a half cups of Baileys Lo Cal Balancer, and NAF Superflex. I've just taken her off her biotin supplement but if her hooves deteriorate again she'll go back on it.
Darcy and Libby - 3yo and 2yo, probably 16hh and 15.2hh, both off work over the winter and Darcy is a bit podgy at the mo. Both get a scoop of Alfa A and 500g Baileys Stud Balancer, and NAF biotin for Libby's feet (can't guarantee that Libs will get the bucket with the biotin in so I have to give it to both of them!).
When Maiden was in work (six days a week of schooling, hacking, jumping, competing unaff dressage at weekends, etc.) she was getting a scoop of Happy Hoof and one of Baileys Working Horse and Pony Nuts, twice per day. Was considering putting her on oats too though as she was distinctly lacking "sparkle". When she comes back into work she'll probably stay on the HiFi and get a small quantity of the Working Nuts again, as she'll only hack once she's recovered but she always needs extra energy!

solo is a 16.1hh 12yo gelding, in light work, poor doer, and in at night....
he gets-
- 2 scoops HiFi Lite
- 1 scoop pony nuts
- 1 scoop Baileys cooked cereal meal

red is a 15hh 17yo gelding, in light/medium work, good doer, in at night....
he gets-
- 1 scoop HiFi Lite
- half scoop pony nuts
- half scoop 16+

both get as much hay/haylage as they'll eat.

mine all get a basic feed of about a scoop or more of 'fluff', either HiFi (if fat or in need of something to keep them busy while other horses have time to eat their feeds!), HiFi Lite (if lami prone), or Readigrass. e.g. Big wb gets 4 scoops of Readigrass to keep him busy, cos he's in with the babies and will stuff theirs if he doesn't have something to keep him occupied for 20 mins (he hates HiFi and will leave his feed if he finds it in the bucket)!
then they get varying amounts of Alfa depending on age, weight, energy level, work, and a bit of Baileys Stud Balancer, ditto. if they really need to put on weight, then Baileys No1 cooked cereal meal. if i want sparkle without fizz, then Outshine. soaked speedibeet added to everyone's, amount depending on weight. all fed twice daily on:
Moose (18hh wb, 12yr old, living out, rugged, light work)
4 scoops Readigrass, 1/3 scoop Alfa, 1/2 cup Balancer, 1/2 scoop sugarbeet.
Ellie (2yr old wbxtb to make 17hh, living out, finally gaining weight after over a year with me, she was in such a state internally when i got her!)
2/3 scoop alfa, 1/3 scoop readigrass, 1/2 scoop No1, 2 cups Balancer, 1/2 scoop sb.
Daisy (2yr old trakxID/tb to make 16.2, living out, built like brick privy and holds weight)
1 scoop HiFi, 1 scoop Readigrass, 1/3 scoop Alfa, 1 cup Balancer, 1/3 scoop sb.
Dilly (6yr old 15.2 wbxID/tb, living out, rugged, light work, really holds condition)
1 scoop HiFi, handful Readigrass, 1/2 cup Balancer, 1/4 scoop sb.
Katy (7 yr old 16.3 TB, in at night, medium work)
1 scoop HiFi, 1/2 scoop Readigrass, 1/4 scoop Alfa, 1 cup Balancer, 1/2 cup Outshine, 1/2 scoop sb.
all have ad-lib hay except Dilly, who is an absolute pig!
sounds quite complicated but isn't really!
i don't feed cereals at all unless a horse is competing at a level where they really need the extra energy, and then i only feed Soaked Whole Oats, as recommended to me by Ellen Collinson.

Elle gets a scoop of molichop, a scoop of cool mix and a mug of equilibra twice a day, a hayledge net overnight and a bin full in the morning. She's 15.2, 19 years old and coming back into work after having a foal, out all day and in at night.

i feed
happy hoof
senior mix
cod liver oil
apple cider vinegar
laminaze at present but switching to a general vitamin and mineral supplement and magnesium supplement
garlic
carrots/apples/and other suitable veg like parsnips i have leftover for her
i am awaiting her green lipped muscle shell supplement to turn up as this is supposed to be great for joints

and she gets hay each day

all i can say is this is what age has brought, she just used to get chaff and that was pretty much it, oh how things change!

The basis of my feeding regime in winter is plenty of good quality hay or haylage. In addition to this, the two good-doers get a little AlfaBeet whilst the older pony gets a bigger tub of it. My 7/8 TB veteran gets AlfaBeet with vegetable oil and micronized barley.

Mine is 14.1, 25yo and in light work, stabled at night. He's fed a big handful of happyhoof and a big handful of speedi-beet. Also gets vits&mins and glucosamine.

All mine live out 24/7 (with additional hay) except the shetland who comes in at night.

16hh Luso x TB 9yo, currently doing BSJA all winter and does BE as well in the season. Gets in each feed (fed twice a day):
Heaped Stubbs scoop of Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes
Tiny handful Apple Chaff (he likes the smell!)
Sugar beet

15.2hh Welsh D 7yo. 2 feeds a day so per feed gets:
1/2 stubb scoop Leisure Mix
Big handful Apple Chaff
Sugar Beet

13.2hh Welsh x Highland 20yo:
Big handful Safe & Sound and a little Apple Chaff

Shetland 17yo (laminitic):
Big handful Safe & Sound
Also gets high fibre nuts in her Snak-A-Ball

In their morning feed they all also get an all round vit & min supplement and their NAF Superflex added.

tb ex racer
scoop of baileys no4
scoop of alfa a oil
half a scoop of speedibeet
calmer
pink powder
apples and carrots
twice a day
4 sections of hay at night

Mine are all fed once in the evening:
15.3hh 10yo:
Blue Chip Pro
1/3 scoop Hi fibre cubes
1/3 scoop speedibeet (wet)

14.2hh 8yo:
1/2 scoop Hi Fi lite
Handful Hi fibre cubes
Cupful of speedibeet juice

15hh 19yo:
Blue Chip Pro
1/2 scoop of Hi Fibre cubes
Hoof & Joint supplement

Babies both 2yo:
1/2 scoop Hi Fi lite
1/2scoop Hi fibre cubes
1/2 scoop Speedibeet (wet)

In addition to this they all get ad lib good quality hay.

Cairo - 22 years old, 16.3 clydesdale and in light work - riding or loose schooling - mainly trot and a little canter for 15 - 45 mins four days a week.

1 1/2 stubbs scoops of lucie stalks (SS) 1/2 green gold (alfa), mug of black sunflower seeds, mug of linseed, brewers yeast and MSM powder, handful of carrots.

Chancer - 3 years old, 15 hands gypspy cob and in similar amount of work to Cairo.

Has same as Cairo but no MSM and has 1 scoop of lucie stalks and 1 of green gold.

They get this twice a day all year round as we don't have lush grazing.

In winter they also get 1/2 scoop of sloppy speedibeet in each feed, plus one scoop of highlife nuts in their ball. I feed ad lib stalky hay so they basically get lots of low cal feed so they are eating all the time but don't put on the weight.

When I want to temporary increase Chancer's condition for a show I add more green gold and grass nuts and double the linseed.

Jewel is a 15.2hh 13yr old Dutch Warmblood mare, in light work, not a very good doer, and in at night, out during the day.

She gets:

1/4 scoop of Applechaff
Small handfull of Pasture Mix
Cortaflex
Garlic
Apples/carrots

She has this once a day, and when she is in for the night, she has a soaked haynet, and about 2 slices in her hayrack

I have recently swapped both my TB's to the Winergy complete feeds - so far so good, they have energy, are holding good weight and seem happy on it...

Dracy gets 3.5 kg of med energy a day split between 2 feeds and Pinky 3.5 kg of the low energy... both get a cup of balancer which I am just using up.

Its great at night when making up feeds, no more fussing and faffing about with different feeds and supplements or waiting on beet etc, just chuck into bucket, stir with water and add carrots and its ready to go!!

14.3hh irish cob medium work - chaff and pasture mix / garlic / veg oil and carrots but presently having "time off" so now on happy hoof / garlic and veg oil only to prevent weight gain.
