Ok guys, getting a labrador puppy, what would you all recommend feeding??
I have seen royal canin/james wellbeloved are all 30% protein but i read on a labrador forum they should have about 26% protein rather than higher levels as that puts them at risk of bone disease...true/false?
I am questioning it as had our newfie on RC then JW until she was 31/2 and she has got so many problems its unreal. Knee OA/hip dysplasia/elbow OA skin, eyes, ears. So i am now thinking our bernese we had previously had pedigree from a pup and lived to be 91/2 only dying due to a tumor of his heart so maybe the "best" dog stuff isnt best afterall.

Your opinions please...i want a healthy puppy!! Will post piccies once we see them, only 1week old tomorrow

The RSPCA (my friend works there and I volenteer) as well as my auntie swear by James Welbeloved, they do a big range of feeds for different types of dog.

There are sooo many posts on here about feeding puppies and dogs have a look, you will learn a lot!

Personally I feed raw. Skinners is very good in some peoples opnions on here, including mine I use if I have problems with raw supplies and if going on holiday. I have bought a large breed pup up on raw, hes doing super 1 yr next month and at the moment a lovely 40kg but not over weight.

I think JWB is overpriced for what it is (skinners and wainwrights are cheaper and basiclaly the same).

Mine is on Beta Senior mixed with Natures Diet meat. I forget what he was on as a pup - he was stupidly fussy so pretty much had whatever he would eat! Hasn't done him any harm tho :)

Arden Grange is good for larger breeds, or Skinners (less pricey) or Fish4Dogs

My little dog is on raw, DUCK frozen complete food for Kong stuffing and hand feeding when training and chicken carcasses the rest of the time.

Big dog is on Wainwrights senior salmon and potato, he is only four but like your Newfie has had a lot of skin and ear problems and cannot tolerate high protein levels - so he gets a very low protein dry food and what actual protein he gets is from raw meat and fish, if that makes any sense. It is the only food that works for him.

JWB is fine, but not exactly amazing, middle of the road if you will. I like fish4dogs but personally feed raw. I wouldnt feed RC no matter what, but feeding is quite a personal thing and different brands suit different dogs. Whatever you choose look for high meat content, the less cereal the better, and dont buy anything the supermarkets keep in stock.

Our lancashire heeler pup is on Fish4Dogs puppy food and everyone comments on his condition, you can almost see your reflection in his coat. My GSD is on Skinners Field and Trial Duck & Rice and raw on different days, I personally haven't used Skinners puppy food but know people who have with good results.

I've got one on Wafcol Salmon and Potato and one on Pro Plan Puppy Sensitive. You could read a million threads on the internet about the benefits of this diet or that method of feeding but at the end of the day you need to feed what suits your dog, what you can afford and what is convenient for you.

Most on raw mainly chicken wings/drum sticks/carcass/tripe/mince/fish, but kennel dogs on chudleys/skinners with tripe added in (kennel dogs cannot have bones) as well the akita would probably eat everyones plus them (other dogs) if they tried to take a bone from her:D

Greyhound has beta salmon & rice,he's very sensitive with dry food & it's the only thing he can tolerate. JRT had burns as he had allergies & it's the only food he can tolerate.... I also had nature diet, natures harvest type things, left overs from me,my mum sends several tubs of left overs a week,fish4dogs salmon mousse(when it's on offer!) & various other bits & bobs. Elderly, fussy, grumpy lurcher has whatever she pleases!
