What do you for horses with seasonal disorders?

My boy isn't backed yet. I have begun groundwork with him but not it has come to a stop due to soggy field (we have very limited use of school!!), I have started long reining so can take him for inhand walks and long rein when I have a helper (which isn't too often!), but other than that I'm stuck for what to do with him! He's out at the moment during the day but soon that will be reduced to 3-4 hours playing out time. I have put up a Himalayan salt lick which he quite likes but already the 'fed up' behaviour has begun - He has as much haylage as I dare feed him, I've tried swedes but their life expectancy is around 35 seconds!! So, what, if anything can I do? I'm looking at stable toys but theres nothing which takes my fancy - can anyone recommend any? I groom and spend time with him but he's out naked so I don't want to fuss with his coat too much. I hate to see him so down in winter though!!! Roll on spring!
 
Have you ever tried playing football ,or chase with ur horse? my cob gets bored easily ,so he has to play with:- a stable ball with a handle (for flinging), a treatball with cut up carrots or pony cubes, a couple of tubtrugs (again for flinging) get the idea-he likes flinging things!!!:D:D:D
 
I am planning on putting a couple of apples in her water so she can play apple bobbing:D

Also, throw some carrots in his stable for him to look for this will keep him busy and maybe try a stable mirror ( ive got mine on order)
so hoping it will do the trick:)
 
I would try and find straw for him to eat instead of haylage and perhaps invest in the teeeny holed haynet that there is a thread running about at the moment (plus video)
 
How about a stable mirror? Do you have any nice random grass or wide verges around that you could take him to and let him graze in hand for half an hour or so?

agree ... I would not stable an unbacked /unworked horse if there was an alternative. in fact non of my horses like being stabled.
