I bought a little 3.5t a while back and after £800 of work it will be coming home at the end of this week with a shiny new MOT so now the fun starts!

There is no living, its just a box on a van chassis, the back is slatted wood, unlined, metal floor, there is a Luton - nice wide shelf and two partitions set up to travel two forward facing, the gap in front of the breast bar is a couple of feet plus the Luton

I now need to kit it out completely from fitting out the back to stowing all my gear, I'd like to carry one pony comfortably (max 13.2)

Any tips on the fitments, layout or even what equipment people keep on board plus things people have learned from would be appreciated!

It depends on what you will be doing, we had one which had a first aid kit for horses, with tools to remove shoes, a spare head collar with lead rope, nothing else except ash trays stuffed with sweetie papers, it was used to go to the beach and back. The horses travelled tacked up, sheets in winter.
For parties you also need one or two small haynets, water, bucket sponge and brush. Something to pick up poo if you are posh. Two camping chairs £5.00 each.
Overnight: hay/haylage, two or three feeds, hoofpick, rug.
You have to think about what to do if you have a puncture or breakdown., obviously keep tank topped up, and check oil and water and brake fluid every time with a new lorry.
I think you are best to start off with minimal fittings and decide how things will fit in. Anything you build must be strong and horse proof.

Aha.......... this is a different Q............. it is vital the floor is solid and urine resistant, others will answer, but I would make sure the plywood is hardwood ply, more expensive but it should not rot.
Use sawdust/woodpellets to keep floor dry and keep clean.
Any fixtures [nails etc] need to be rust resistant.

You can print these off and discuss with the builder.

Wow I am very impressed with The Fuzzy Fury's list! Esp the spare crash hat.

The thing I find most important in my lorry (apart from safety of floor, doors etc) is my lockable tack locker. This is opened from outside and when I am riding I only have to take a tiny key with me for the tack locker and I lock all the valuables inside (including my main lorry keys). I also have 2 other cupboards with doors on them, as my non-horse area gets covered in hay as it is underneath where the haynet hangs and my horse's head is.

Also in terms of the bulkier items to take, I take a couple of folding chairs, as my sisters and I often sit and picnic after a ride, and a set of steps for mounting.

Hope you have loads of fun with the new lorry WelshD! :)

When we got ours my daughter crammed it with every item you could imagine. It was literally like a mobile tack shop/spare wardrobe/kitchen.
I however downsized thinking more of the weight on board issue! I have foldable chairs, first aid basics, a few brushes, bits of string/hair bobbles spare lead rope and headcollar. Just the essentials

Have fun :)

I have a trailer so I know I don't count! But I still have room as the partition is set 3/4 / 1/4 with the 3/4 in the horses favour. The other 1/4 I use for storage, I have buckets, a little step ladder, his spare rug, and shovel and broom (affixed to the side) and also store Baileys full haynets that he eats whilst at a show in there. There is also room for a little transistor radio which I play a talk show for him whilst he travels. Its amazing what you can put into a trailer. The only thing is when we get to our destination most of it has to come out for me to be able to swing the partition over to unload the horse! :)

Not amazing at all, I saw a four wheeled marathon carriage which was fitted in to a trailer on its side, the cob just fitted in to the empty side, it was a larger than average trailer, but there were quite few amazed competitors when it turned up at the competition.

More to add: copy of insurance doc, breakdown card in sun-visor.
Spares box behind drivers seat - lunge-line, stirrup leathers, lightbulbs (for headlights) & assorted other 'useful' things in it :)

Tobiano, I just visualised the box from back to front :redface3: I love my locker too, but I always take the key with me unless at a RC training session in a private gated yard. My key is on a small carabineer clip, so clips into most things, like bum bag or jacket etc, or even onto the saddle :)
I used to drive 32-38 footers, so my current tonka toy is positively weeny in comparison ;)

One thing to try to get on a side loading loorry, is a good big 'step bumper'. Mine is great - I can shuffle onto it & swing onto CF, saves having a mounting block/step with me. Only took CF a couple of training sessions to learn to stand close up to the box :)

Flipping eck!! Some of you must be doing a round the world trip!! I only take a spare waterproof rug/first aid kit/water and buckets/poo shovel/haynet/grooming kit and tack plus my clothes as appropriate for competition.I only travel locally though. Oh, and the neddy of course!!

thank you all so much for taking the time to type out your lists and offer so many tips, it is much appreciated!

Horsebox comes home tomorrow, I am so excited!

I try to keep it very lightweight in a 3.5. I have a saddle pole and bridle hook but if I take 2 horses tack goes in the 2nd car.
I need quick release tie up leads and hay nets.
Also a tub for water and a container of water.
Broom, shovel and old bag for poo clearing.
Also a small folding stool as a mounting block. (With string attached so I can leave it outside tied up).
There is also a flat tyre inflation aerosol can for emergencies.
I was thinking of a bag and some cat litter to make an emergency loo in the back....

Working on the basis that if it can.go wrong, on a horsebox it will, I have in mine (and have used all of it over the years):
Hiviz
Warning triangle
Tow hook
Sharp knife
Scissors
Gaffer tape
Wd40
Bungee cords
Plastic ties
Torch
Emergency twenty, plus change for toll road/bridge
Drinks and food for horse and human
Horse/human first aid kit
Really good breakdown cover

On reflection, the thing is, I THINK I have all the useful stuff that people have listed - but i have no idea exactly where it is in the lorry so I would probably not find it in an emergency. Perhaps its useful to have a schematic of where everything is! :)

I don't have a lot in mine to keep the weight down

Horse/human first aid kit, only essentials, think I have plasters, vetwrap, cotton wool, sudocrem and scissors

Grooming kit

Spare head collar and lead rope

Water container and water bucket

Hoof pick

Few crops

Pair of boots

Then obv when I take it out, I take tack, rug, haynet etc
