What do you like/dislike about cobs/hairies/traditionals

I used to think they were ploddy and rather untidy but now I'm looking for one to buy! Tried a couple and they've been awesome, most comfy things ever and they are forward going.

I can't wait to have my coblet :-)

When I had mine on loan from a trekking centre, to be honest a traddie cob was the very last thing I thought I'd get as my next horse, but to cut a long story short, I couldn't bear to send him back again!

Likes: such a sweet gentle boy, nothing fazes him (most of the time, and when it does he gives plenty of warning!), never sick or sorry, a good honest horse who "tells" you what he likes and what he doesn't like - and says it in words of one syllable so you know what's what; uncomplicated, laid-back. Has got a sense of humour though, coz if you put someone up there that thinks they can ride he'll soon convince them of the folly of their pride!! He's totally adaptable, can do a good'ish dressage test if asked nicely, pops a fence, fab for pleasure rides/hacking out, etc etc.

Dislikes: WHY does he always have to find the muckiest place in the field just where the sheeps turd is, and roll in that??? Grrrr, mucky boy! Oh plus all his feathers and long hairy coat, now dealt with by the clippers!! Much better IMO.

Like: Most of them tend to be laid back, easy to train, cuddly and bombproof.

Dislikes: When they have full feathers as they are a pain to keep clean and they end up with mites.

I have never owned one but have had contact with a few cobs. The ones I have dealt with have been extremely stubborn. Plus coloured cobs.. I might get a lot of hatemail but I find them very boring to look at.

However, I would get an interesting coloured cob who was bombproof for my mum to ride!!

I am extremely biased.. Having a dun pony before followed by a palomino horse, both very fine. I like the more "unusual" colours.

At the end of the day we all like/dislike things about our own horses and as long as we love them thats all that matters :)

How can you not love a stinky cob?!

I love that he changes from hairy to smooth and beautiful for shows. I love that his massive feet splash muddy water up my back and that he tries to hide behind me on the way out in case there are monsters. I love that he shouts his head off for me if he can hear but not see me. I love that he can walk in a perfectly straight line down the road whilst craning his neck to look at the scary bin on the drive.

What's to dislike?

God, no, they're not! A potential sharer came and rode and said he was 'too forward'! He is very responsive and doesn't like whips but nothing scary, just goes like stink if you ask! :D

why oh why do ppl keep posting "what do you like or dislike/what breed do you hate - they are the horse the most amasing creature on this earth - they allow us to sit on their back, put a metal bar in thier mouth, put them in a small stableor traile( they are a flight animal) so yes there are breeds i wouldnt buy but i still love the horse regardless of breed - they are trully amazing creatures and i personally feel humble around them but mmm im seen as dappy by some but mmmmm they are rather amasing arnt they :) x

Amazing.

I think it's quite lovely to celebrate the individual breeds/types that we own.

I love any excuse to show off my lad because I'm super proud that I took a horse that was barely backed and have done fricking wonders with him, IMO! Anyone's ride, sweet nature, totally unspoilt, responsive.

I could go on but I don't want to make people puke!

i learnt to ride on mostly cobs at my riding school and i think they are amazing. turn their hoof to anything, so many different characters and types, and most i have met are intelligent and some too much so :gasp: definatly not push button! but really lovely- love all the hair :D
i am not riding a cob at the moment- a 13.2hh skinny minny connemara :p but i think they are lovely :)

Well i have a few types wb tbs natives fell welsh and a baby cob x so two true cobs i guess a welsh d who is nervy until he knows you hates all traffic boxwalks is bargey if in fear hates the farrier but suffers him the farrier likes him though but he is a lovely boy honest had a bad time in his youth and the more he gets to know you the more he likes you even strangers from the frist time so its a trust thing. He was an angel when the warmblood came looked after him in the field even though the warmblood was a drip and its not like the sec d as he is a bit of a loner is head of the herd but never bullies so is a real sweetie.
He is a real good if forward ride never nasty or sneaky if a bit on his toes and a dun hunky chunk often mistaken for a stallion now 17 and loved dearly for all his faults .

I also have a coloured show type cob not hairy but what i would call a pony 15h bought him as he was a complete disaster buy for a novice we knew good looking not common but has been a challenge hates new horses coming in to the herd will not accept them chases them, can have very strong opinions and is taken at the moment to napping and bucking he is young and i think had the wrong start before us but i always say to friends or family if you look at the big flullfy baby looking with his innocent face in the field you would never guess.

I have to say he has never tried to kick or been unruly when handling apart from barging out of stable when i first got him he now backs up so i think this was down to lack of educatiuon although i would say he has that bit more horse about him than those real hairy mollies but i think whatever you have in looks and prescence you nearly always pay in tempremant a bit.

I love them because they are so EASY. They just take life in their stride and get on with it wihout a making a fuss. So laidback, sensible and tolerant.

A good cob should also be forward going and sensitive to ride and fairly athletic. They should be FUN to ride.

I love their sturdiness and their masses of flowing mane, tail and feathers.

And they're just so cute :o

I dislike them when they're overly on the forehand or are very stuffy and lazy. I can't stand bad mannered bargy cobs but that's their owners fault. And I hate seeing fat cobs, esp when their owns think that's what they should look like.

I love my boys personality.Hes a similar build to this one, except hes a piebald. Tho he loves to destroy turnout rugs lol

I admire everything about them, from my own 2 cobs I have found them to be intelligent, loyal, sensible, people orientated and fun! (and very hardy). They can turn their hooves to everything from dressage to driving and I love it when traditionals have full feather, mane and tail, they look gorgeous :)

Hmmmm - easy!

Beautiful ground manners in the Summer. But in the winter when there is food in the stable and she's not there....... Give her an inch and she'll take a mile. Not a Micron given in winter....!
Patient, willing to please, good for farrier, falls asleep while being clipped, tidy in the stable. But - get on her back and she's up for anything. NOW!
Crafty, clever, beautiful, bolshy, certainly not a novice ride. It's taken me years to learn to ride her - and she still has her own very definate opinions!

I don't like the way she pees in her WHITE tail. I don't like the immense coat she grows 2 weeks after being clipped.

She's one of life's beautiful mysteries. A real Diva. It's a good job I love her. :D

I love my welsh cob, love that she is easy to keep, hardy, never sick or sorry, has amazing feet that will hold the same set of shoes for a year if left!!
Dont like the fact that she is opinionated, and occasionally stubborn! x
