I look for a pony that is happy to be a lead rein. is good manners and is easy to work with. Needs to also be ridden by someone not on lead rein also so that the pony does not get board.
i remember my first pony and he was a new forest i belive that the make one of the best lead rein ponys...also as steve said " Needs to also be ridden by someone not on lead rein also so that the pony does not get board."
Completly agree about them needing to do something interisting off lead too, lucky to have some short lightweight teens in family who can ride quite well.
Easy for small child to catch.
Loves being groomed (for hours if necessary).
Safe for small child (5-6 yrs sort of age) to learn to pick out hooves.
Happy to be led over mini jumps.
The perfect lead rein pony doesn't necessarily make a good first ridden IMO.
I have a fantastic, quiet, obedient lead rein pony who has won countless championships. However I will be looking for a first ridden pony for my daughter before long.........
Lead rein ponies only walk and trot, they never canter and really take their commands from the handler rather than the rider.
First ridden ponies are harder to find, they need to be quiet, obedient to little legs, canter when asked and NEVER get strong, excitable or nervous. Good ones are like goldust!
