i remember my first pony and he was a new forest i belive that the make one of the best lead rein ponys...also as steve said " Needs to also be ridden by someone not on lead rein also so that the pony does not get board."

First few boxs on my mental list too

Completly agree about them needing to do something interisting off lead too, lucky to have some short lightweight teens in family who can ride quite well.

Well apart from all the sensible things, but also something that is not a little gready little pig and snatching for grass all the time!

Somthing that is kick on not pull back, bompproof in traffic, takes no notice of kids running around and screaming.

The perfect lead rein pony doesn't necessarily make a good first ridden IMO.
I have a fantastic, quiet, obedient lead rein pony who has won countless championships. However I will be looking for a first ridden pony for my daughter before long.........
Lead rein ponies only walk and trot, they never canter and really take their commands from the handler rather than the rider.
First ridden ponies are harder to find, they need to be quiet, obedient to little legs, canter when asked and NEVER get strong, excitable or nervous. Good ones are like goldust!
