My horse is coming in for winter at the weekend, and although it's a pain there are some things I really enjoy about it; so I was thinking - what does everyone else look forward to about a horsey winter?

I like ...

* Wrapping up warm to go to the yard - I love bodywarmers
* Cold frosty mornings
* Dylan's head over the stable door talking to me when I arrive :)
* Making up FEEDS! He gets no hard feed in summer, so it's a big thing lol
* Making a lovely big shavings bed
* Getting to see everyone at the yard because we're all there at the same time
* Being able to ride for AGES without getting too hot
* Gloves and woolly hats
* Making Dylan all cosy in his pyjamas before he goes to bed

There are probably more, I'll add them as I think of them :)

Picture that xmas card all us horsey people get of the racehorses on exercise galloping up the frosty gallops with the visiable breath coming out of horse and rider.

That is what i look forward to, being on the pointers on a frosty morning galloping up the gallop. Nothing better. Love it. :D

What do I like about winter? Um, the, end of it. I hate winter with a passion. God, I'm so miserable. I will be reading this thread with interest though to see if someone suggests something that I do deep down like about winter. I suppose theres no flies. One positive.

- Hacking on frosty mornings.
- Open fires - started with those already. :)
- Christmas; mostly the tree and christmas dinner, but seeing family is nice too. :D
- Snow, if we get it, although I don't look forwards to driving in it.
- Curling up inside with a good book when the wind is howling.
- Warming my hands inside rugs on cold mornings (poor beasts!).
- Mucking out! They only come in occasionally and I love making the beds up and then mucking out the next day - sad I know!

I could probably think of more; never get hot riding, no flies, etc. I quite like winter - when the weather isn't completely foul! :)

I love winter.

Hacking out on a frosty morning. Walking the dogs on a frosty morning.

Snow, I love getting up extra early no cars on the road and its still dark and colours of the ground that covered in snow. Making the first foot print in the snow. Watching the horses and dogs play in the snow.

Winter riding, Pea perfers to be ridden in winter, hes more forward and alert. ALso best way to warm up is to ride.

Warpping up warm in lots of clothes. Hat, scarff, gloves.

Open fires.

Ummm, Spring?

No rain, no mud, no flies.

I'm with you. HATE IT!!! :mad: Wet dogs, wet horse, mud everywhere, boring evenings, weekdays of seeing no one at yard cos I'm there after work and most of them lucky buggers don't work full time, bored horse cos can't hack out much, bored me cos fields are wet so no fun gallops, no outside jumping, no XC, no light and expensive heating bills.

The only thing I look forward to is counting the days down until the clocks go forward again to BST, when I get to see the horses in daylight once again.

HATE winter with a vengeance.

I HATE the winter, I hate the darkness, the cold, the wind, rugs, layers, gloves, constantly feeling cold, ice on the roads, snow making it sooo stressful to get to the horses and then on to work....oh i hate it completely!

I'm sooo glad I'm not the only one. Going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark, I hate being cold and as nice as a log fire is, its so messy and time consuming, no more bbq's, no more sun bathing, little or no hacking. No more competitions. Icey roads, trying to get my little car through snow. Boo!

The only good thing about winter is the photo opportunities (and now I will have a go at attaching a photo or two!!!) here goes..........

Well that was one but don't know how to attach another at the same time! Ummm.... more practice me thinks!

Here's another - my particular favourite from last winter.

I used it as a screensaver for ages.....

And just to prove I can do horses too... this is my stallion Roux....
I took a great video of him just before this .... cantering across the field in the sunshine and then he skidded to a halt in front of me and reared - then we were having a snowball fight - me throwing them and him rearing! (just your average stallion behaviour - he loves to play).

And I managed to put two on one post WOW, getting there!!!!

* Snow
* Clipped beasties that are easy to keep clean
* Hot clothing after a long ride
* Frosty hacks
* The cute little robins that come to stay :D
* CHRISTMAS
* Big shavings beds

What I DON'T like:

- SADS (seems I am going to suffer this year :( again )
- fog, bloody hate it
- ice -waiting ages for your car to defrost, skidding all over the road, no turnout for Gees
- mud
- Loonatic horses
- the constant feeling of frozen bones
- Having to ride in the morning or before 2:30
- Rain

SNOW!!!!!!

Are you mad!!!

I love the fact no horseflies eating me alive. Also that don't get hot mucking out. I also like to know they are tucked up snuggly in their beds munching whilst it is horrible outside.

Having said that the youngsters who wintered out were just as happy with 5 inch icicles hanging off their ears. But I did used to make them warm feeds as I obviouslly spent too much time as a kid watching the Reddy Brek adverts.

I thought of even more ...

* Lighting the coal fire in the living room
* Sticking my hands under Dylan's rug to heat them up
* Cold sunny days
* SNOW!!! Although we were hit hard last year, had 2" of ice for over a month - we had to spread the midden out on the yard so we could walk/lead the horses about!
* This ...
