I am sick and tired of people being fecking rude as we are not selling anymore hay in large quantities, we have 50 bales to last until the new cut, yet people expect you to be able to give them what they want when they want - it ain't happening - we have none left!!!!! what part of none do these idiots not understand????????? To suggest they use haylage is just criminal - they look at you like you have landed from the planet zog........well, if certain people hadn't wasted so much bloody hay by letting it be trampled all over the field or lobbing it on the muck heap, then we wouldn't be so short now.....I know it was a hard winter, but common sense just went straight out of the window - rant over.

I've been trying to get some, tried every were but I understand that many must keep it from them self or regular customers.

I bought a load in which I ordered just after the "cold snap", farmers locally have been desperate because of their sheep so I got extra as the boy is in so much. Whereabouts are you?

They should be grateful if they can get any hay or big bale haylage at all. I phoned 6 people when I ran out last week and everyone was only selling small quantities to regular clients which is fair enough. If I was a regular client I'd be expecting them to put me first. I've now been lucky enough to find 12 big bales of haylage privately. I think those selling forage are being very reasonable, especially on price. There just isn't much left, what can you do??

Thinking myself VERY lucky that our yard owners cuts his own hay, and while does sell it to non liveries, there is plenty left, and he would keep it for us guarenteed customers if he ran short. thank god.

Well said moses i mentioned the same little while back and got shot down and this season if people can store and buy off field i would reccommennd it and buy early winter and keep some for later in season.

I know exactly what you mean, we cut our own hay and have been inundated with new customers asking for hay and when you say you haven't got any left they can get quite shirty, some have been very polite but others I have been most surprised about!

I think it is just that there has been such a shortage of good hay this year.

Our feed merchant is selling hay - from Yorkshire - at £4.75/small bale, so there is hay around its just expensive. If you could find a phone number they can contact if they want large quantities then at least they could draw their own conclusions. (Bet they change their mind when then get the price!!)

£4.75 is fairly standard if not cheap round here at the moment. The whole area has run out! Even the big hay suppliers.

I pick up a big bale haylage every week and sell bags off of it at a fiver each to other liveries and i actually make a profit every week and my haylage costs me nothing! - Anyone who has a trailer should try it - i havent paid for hay for months and everyone is chuffed cos they get more from me for a fiver than they can get in the small bales.

I am lucky, make my own hay ( but have just about run out) But at £4.75 think your self lucky. My local feed mrchant is currently charging £6.50 for a standard bale (Cambridge)

I buy my hay in from a local farmer and he was telling me that someone phone phoned up and asked how much hay he has his reply was i think 30 bales so she said i will buy the lot collect in 2 hrs he refused and she went off on one!! He tried to explain he was keeping it for his regulars but she couldnt understand. We are very lucky with our farmer as he delivers a bale at a time and when we need it usually the same day you phone

Well I plan ahead and work out how much I will need and ensure that I have reserved and provided a cheque payment for enough to see me right through. My lad is reliant on hay all year round being on restricted grazing and stabled at night all year so I cannot afford to run out. Even through the bad weather and snow I was still feeding my boy the same amount so I dont really understand how people can run out...perhaps on a big yard it may be tricky to work out perhaps.
I think suppliers do take the michael though charging rediculous prices just because there is less about...if they are selling it anyway and presumably making a profit somewhere along the line, there is no excuse for hiking prices.

because people have nothing better to do than argue and moan for no reason, it is obviously YOUR FAULT that the weather was bad last year and there isn't any hay around. i am looking forward to the next few months of people moaning about hay.

I know roughly how much hay I need for the year & place my order with my supplier who has a small holding. I pay for the hay up front & they keep it stored for me & I take my lorry up & bring back 40/50 bales at a time. As a result I never run out. Forward planning is the key I suppose. ;)

My lot lives out 24/7, so now need no more hay since about mid march. However, I too planned ahead and was lucky to get 20 bales hay at £2.50 (not too bad either!) - This is for the 'just in case' scenerio and I will also wait til my father makes some this year to stock up fully for next winter!
